Adidas signed the £700m deal with Man Utd not Nike. Nike actually did the numbers and it wouldn't have worked for them. Due to Adidad paying that much for Man Utd they've had to drop Andy Murray, won't renew the England cricket team and might have to drop the Lions.

Ah okay, fair enough, my bad.

Re: Adidas' ridiculously expensive deal with Man United... At what point are you, as a sponsor, not just paying over the odds in the assumption they'll succeed, but are actually giving them so much money that your intervention gives them a distinct advantage?

Oh I think that's exactly the calculation. That money is going to fund global superstar brands to be clad in red adidas shirts.

Another example of the football establishment consolidating power with the top teams.
Like waiting for a select few to climb to the top of the ladder then greasing the middle rungs.

Champions League essentially the same thing.

Investments are a gamble? Who knew.

I'm pretty sure they aren't sponsors but kit manufacturers. Chevrolet are (among) Man Utd's (hundreds) of sponsors.

What difference that makes is not really clear. Is there any way of Chevrolet knowing how many additional cars have been sold by having their name emblazoned across Man Utd's shirts? Not likely.

No, at the end of the day adidas/nike/etc sponsor teams banking on them being successful.

That's not what he's saying at all.

He's saying sponsorships get to the point of openly helping a team to win trophies by overpaying, rather than just being a mutually beneficial deal for both parties.

His point has nothing to do with it being a gamble or a risk. Read the entire thing.

So if an electrician bets on a horse he isn't a gambler?

Its gambling, the more successful teams attract bigger sponsorship fees/kit deals.

Well yes, if paying over the odds guaranteed companies success do you not think they'd all be at it, its gambling.

Nike wont shell out $5b to sponsor an ad break during a re-run of last of the summer wine on uk gold.

It's spot on. United wouldn't be where they are without huge endorsement deals. They won the league at just the right time as money started rolling into the game which meant they could attract bigger deals which allowed them to spend more money which made them more successful which meant they earn more money etc etc etc
No one is chucking money at United in the hope they'll win trophies. They're chucking money at them to be associated with a winning team and a huge global brand. And by giving them that money they're helping ensure they continue to be a successful and huge global brand.

I agree. I just think Eskimo was talking about something else completely different to what the post actually said.

Woolwich's approach seems to embody your logic. They move heaven and earth to get that top 4 spot. They'll get the crap kicked out of them in the Cups, and are a joke in the knock-out stages, but they will do anything to stick to their model. And the sponsors back them to the hilt for it. It's actively supporting mediocrity, there's no doubt about it.

Hang on, so you are a tutor for disabled kids, who has set them up a joint account and lets them use it?
Then you are a terribly irresponsible tutor.

What are you teaching these teenagers by giving them access to this group account?! How to get into pointless arguments and where to find foul mouthed rants?

Also, why wouldnt they have thier own accounts? Unless they are severe enough that they cannot handle thier own accounts, in which case they probably shouldnt be using this one either. At the very least have one for the students and one for the tutor....

Out of all the forums on the internet, you set up an account they can use HERE?!
There are loads of spurs forums out there, with exactly the same sort of discussion and debate on, but without all the constant abuse, ANY of them would be better.
We see why you have posted so sparingly ,What the fuck are you on idiot, students with accounts ,irresponsible you complete twat ,we are a group of mates that were brought up in north london ,nine of us attended the same school, others have linked up with us thru our love for our club ,as we have stated many times we are more in number than ten and less than fifteen .Your post is so far of the mark it is laughable as are you .Just read another stunning contribution from you ,telling us all you just bought some stella,HOLD THE FRONT PAGE.Take some of your own advice and find another forum this one seems a little to grown up for you.IDIOT .

Wait, it's a group?? I always imagined he was just using "we" in the same way Gollum uses "we." Come to think of it, I imagined his posts are being spoken in Gollum's voice, as it kind of fits his manner and tone. True story.
