I didn't get anything that resembled Dembele in that video.

He actually plays like the Pogba who tore apart Serie A - alot stronger and bigger than a lot of the opponents he's up against, demands the ball and has bucket loads of confidence when he's on the ball with. I actually think a Dembele/Onomah partnership would work because both are hard to get the ball off in possession, both do a defensive shift and pass completion for both must be high 80s.

Not the best video (no where near as good as the YouTube vid posted of Onomah) but this was when France won the U20 World Cup and Pogba was star midfielder - pretty much the same age as Onomah, you can see the similarities in their game (beyond Pogba shooting in nearly all of the highlights), strong on the ball, bigger then most of the opponents, neat foot work etc.

Based on the video you posted I'd say other than both are midfielders, won the tournament and had an advantageous physicality, they had very little in common.

Pogba comes off as a selfish, arrogant cunt, with terrible decision making and a desire to show off, whereas Onomah seems happy to be the engine of the team. Pogba seems to want glory for himself, Onomah seems to want to his best for the team.

To my eyes there was plenty of Dembele influence in those performances from Josh. In particular the use of the body and strength to shield the ball intelligently from the opposition. Maybe it was just the position he was playing in.

I just saw that as someone using their body against someone clearly weaker. As you get at youth level. Which you'd see from Pogba, Yaya, Vieira etc.

Dembele uses his other leg to block the opposition from getting the ball, not his body. It's such a rare way of doing things that I've never seen anyone do that in history of the game. Whenever he moves with the ball, depending on where the opponent comes from, he'll shift the ball to the other foot so it's impossible for the opponent to get it.

If they are training together then as a young up and coming player why wouldn't you take as much from Dembele as you could, stands to reason.

Between Dier Dembele Wanyama Winks we have the 2 CM slots covered but Onumah looks ideal to slot in as 5th choice in th rotation.
Dier is a defender playing in midfield, Wanyama does fuck all beside breaking up oppositions attack and Dembele is sideways passing specialist.

While Onomah has looked very promising in the u20 tourney, Winks remains the only one likely to become an elite level CM in 1.5-2 years time.

Wanyama scored 5 this season gone, which isn't bad for a part player that does fuck all

Fair enough you have your own opinion but I thought Vic's all round game was a lot better than we expected. Not sure what else Kante does besides mainly break up oppo attacks and he is the second coming according to the pundits. I also thought Dembele was a possession and retention specialist. Dier's versatility enabled the tactical switches and in match formation changes. You might be right that Winksy ends up the most complete central midfielder of the lot though.

Really bossed this tournament, what a contrast to his prem performances but it's a different level (players, pressure, etc.). I'm pleased to see this as I had my doubts as to his ability but he looked really very good, can only assume this is what Poch sees in training and I'm glad I don't call the shots as I was hoping he would be sold. Now I hope he develops, get a bit stronger and fights for a place. Only problem i'm not sure about is his attitude as he seemed petulant at times during this season. Just needs to be proud to wear the shirt and keep his head down. Nobody is expecting him to be a world beater immediately.

I agree with others that there is a bit of Dembele influence to his Onomah's England performances. But I also agree with you that Dembele does more than just put his body between the player and the ball and he is also doing it against top level players. Dembele is the best I have ever seen at what he does, I think you can learn a lot from him but probably impossible to get as good as him.

I sometimes feel like his decision making is too slow and his passes too safe. There are times where he will take 4-5 touches of the ball only to play a simple pass. He doesn't need to make that many touches, he needs to be far more fluid and quick.

He also has the habit of turning into danger. Luckily he's got the pace and strength to make up for any mistakes in an U-20 tournament, but in the premier league he won't have that advantage.

For me Onomah was at his best during this tournament as a counter attacking CM who would carry the ball forward, often out pacing and out muscling any opponent. When he gets the ball from a deep position he will dally on it.

He has potential, however he's stuck in a dilemma - his best position seems to be CM, but some of his weaknesses are essential to a good CM.

Its interesting that Southgate does not even mention Winks when discussing future midfield options?

The above.

He's still learning. Obviously ahead of his peers.
Look at Lookman. He's got bad control and is a sloppy passer. gives the ball away far
too often.
They have to be eased in.
