Still think our efforts are being spent looking at 'inverted' wingers and not the central attacking midfielder everyone seems to pander on for. I see our midfield as
--------------------------------------:sandro:---------------------------------------------
--------------------------:paulinho:---------------:dembele:---------------------------------
obviously chopping and changing with Holtby for one of Paulinho or Dembele and Capoue for Sandro or some weird voodoo mixture of them all, but I see that as our set shape for this season, it suits the midfielders we have at our disposal and gives us gigantic trackbackability which may be a word. Basically see this trio controlling the tempo and covering for some tasty new inverted wingers and our bombarding full backs. This leaves no room for a no10. Where that leaves Siggy is another story maybe just as cover for the wing. One thing AVB does is stick with a system, same with Fergie, same with Jose, same with Sam Allerdyce. Bales 'free role' last year isn't going to be reprised this year by anyone, we've gained two special centre midfielders this window in Paulinho and Capoue, be a gigantic waste to not use them to their full capabilities and limit them by replacing one with a number 10. Thing the Europa League game is the perfect example of this system, though it wasn't used against Palace I believe that was down to Sandro's injury and Capoue being relatively new to things. Looking forward to seeing this formation against Swansea on Sunday:ledleylick:

Why do you want that midfield so badly mate? What good is a player like Soldado, who scored all 24 of his league goals last season in the box, if he can't be given the ball in the box against a stubborn defense? There simply isn't enough creativity and pace there in that midfield to beat the best sides. With one top notch addition, one single addition, we can do these things. We have far too much talent at CDM and up top and far too much pace from our fullbacks to let it go to waste by not having a player who can connect it all. I just simply cannot fathom the rationale in seeing what we have fielded as of yet this preseason and early season and being content with our level of creativity in the middle. It is the equivalent of saying Bale should have remained at fullback IMO.

Wing play will be a huge focus in the Spurs attack. Like always..

Yeah and that's fantastic, definitely what we all want. But if we can't get them the ball in optimal positions as many times as possible, then what's the point of all that talent? The best teams in the Prem have a player who can slip the ball into the box while the defenders are still faced 180 degrees to the ball's trajectory, and one of their forward players is on top of it. We didn't have that player last year (despite strikers having poor seasons), and so we were forced to rely on an unusually talented winger having a very unusual season to provide our attacking impetus. With a CAM, all the moving parts can be connected and we can become the most complete team we can possibly be.

Im pretty sure sandro, dembele and paulinho can pass to the wingers.. They in turn can deliver. Soldado can score. I dont see a huge problem with our team. Obviously additions cant hurt, touch wood, but they may not be completely necesary..

Unless its Holtby we do need a CAM it's true. The problem we have is that teams put ten men behind the ball against us nowadays and so we need someone who can spot, and then deliver that creative ball nice and quick. All our forward players can do this but aren't specialists in it and that means we don't get that ball to unlock the defence enough and when it is tried it's often too late and the defence sees it coming, adjusts position or intercepts.

As of now, they're passing the ball to our wingers out wide, and usually just end up getting the ball back and the ball gets swung around. It's not enough forward play. I think we're a bit starry eyed with our shiny new players and it's being propped up a bit by the fact we haven't slipped yet, but we also have yet to play a truly quality team. In our current format, we will not score enough goals to make top four.

Think you've missed the point, this midfield allows us to have possibly two outlets which you are speaking about. That's what we desperately need if this midfield trio is to be put to use, two silky 'inside forwards' who can beat a man slide a ball through defences and put in a cross or have a pop at goal all with equal aplomb, i'm not asking for much:sandroscream: i'm just saying this VDV style no10 is not viable with the midfield we posses

This is absolutely true. They know as of last year, and through this point, all we do is swing the ball in a semicircle about 30 yards out at the closest. We only pulled off the one goal victories in the last ten minutes because of magic strikes from Gareth Bale or the occasional lapse/hole found in opponent defenses. The top teams simply do not run into these problems because they are constantly creating havoc in backlines and forcing them to shift and adapt.

Paulinho and Dembele aren't quite direct enough. Excellent box-to-box central midfielders, but they don't quite have the pace and footwork to get either themselves or a ball through small and unpredictable areas to get our top line in on goals. It's good enough for maybe top four, but it isn't good enough to be a top side.

Who would you drop for the no10?
