I think we saw the answer as to why Pochettino wanted another CB, and specifically wanted Sanchez. We all thought we'd play 3 at the back with Alderweireld anchoring the middle just as we did last year, with Sanchez simply being a slight upgrade on Dier. But why spend 40m on a slight upgrade?

Poch wanted something totally different, and he needed pace to do it. Alderweireld and Vertonghen played split very wide and with their excellence on the ball were almost auxiliary wide defensive midfielders when we were in possession, allowing there always to be at least one free man for Dier to work with at the base of the diamond and their range of passing kept the wing backs involved while their width covered for them. This only worked because Sanchez in the center with his pace was able to snuff out any risk of a ball over the top or between the center halves.

Until now, we have not had a CB which allowed us to play like this. Sanchez pace dramatically changes the core tactics of our defence and that's what Poch obviously wanted. Watching for 15 minutes yesterday and it was clear that Sanchez wasn't a signing for the future or an expensive marginal upgrade, he is key to a change in the way we will play going forward that Poch had envisioned probably all the back to last season but couldn't execute with the players we had.

Also interesting how hard we went after Foyth as well. Obviously CB he must see as a really key position for how we operate.

Here's the heatmap and passing locations for Alderweireld and Vertonghen. Look at how ridiculously high they were playing, and how many passes in the opponents half they made. There's no way they play this aggressively without Sanchez pace behind them.

Loved his performance on Sat. Not just that he looks solid but it the freedom he gives to Toby and Jan to push on a bit. This then means our wing backs can push on that bit further too. Obviously it only one game but the potential for him personally and the team is exciting! :)

Sanchez will allow Jan and Toby to shift into midfield when dominating and be in line with players like Dembele (we see this with how frequently Jan and Toby are allowed to push forward). Our full backs become wingers and our defensive midfielder parachuted in to cover Toby and Jan when they fancy a cheeky roam forward. Our DM can also switch to being a box to box player pivoting with our CM, who in turn stays back and becomes our defensive shield when others have risked going forward. It's a model that requires discipline and understanding of your role when a certain teammate dares to do yet also allows players to express themselves with the ball on when they feel they see a gap to attack giving teammates another option. When one attacks, you cover his responsibilities!

In moments during a game it allows defenders to become midfielders, full backs to become wingers, defensive midfielders to become defenders and box to box midfielders and central midfielders to become defensive midfield cover. Each need awareness and high levels of concentration so that the teams never left exposed and it allows players to not have to be so rigid. 6 first team players operate in different positions during a game potentially with the top three or four pressing without the ball and floating into pockets of space when the team has possession a striker acting as a pressing defender when defenders of the opposition are in possession and the attacking midfielders closing down space for him to pass thus resulting in errors, limited options and being left with limited choice but to hoof it and surrender possession. The goalkeeper also has the responsibility of an outfield player acting as sweeper without triggering the offside rule, hence allowing a high defensive line and your speedy central defender and his sweeping skills to squeeze 50 yards of space into 20 yards of space for any attacking threat.

Fucking hell, its a team of transformers! All able to happen because we now have a pacy central defender to out run any team that catches us on the break. No wonder teams get dragged all over the place if they try to man mark.

Regimented, flowing football at its finest. What a blueprint! No pressure Davinson ;)

Foyth is supposedly similar to John Stones - so would be one for the positions alongside Sanchez

Foyth is there to put pressure on Toby and Jan or to take over should one leave or get injured.

It would be very interesting to see Diers position when Toby and Jan were bombing forward. Like clockwork!

Dier has virtually no heatmap - he drifted everywhere as needed. Very jack of all trades performance. He also had fewer touches than either Vertonghen or Alderweireld, as they were constantly free and recycling possession.

We were already maybe the most tactically interesting side in the PL, but if this is what Pochettino wants to build (and spending all that money on Sanchez backs that up) ... we're going to play unlike anyone else in quite a long time in England and really even on the continent. This flexible defensive diamond with the 3 CB's positionally sound and then a free roamer in Dier is quite unique - and likely would only work when you have CB's who are as good on the ball as we have, and a defensive midfielder who can seamlessly perform like a CB when needed.

We created push and run, this in itself is a new creation of multiple position, multi purpose football where each player has at least two positions on the park. It makes the signing of Sanchez look so strategically masterful and really demonstrates that we have a very niche market we can buy from.

Dele was a gem, compared to his other attacking signings (I'm going to ruffle feathers here but a formation like this needs smart footballers like the ones at City and whilst I value his impact, Sonny is all action with limitations)

This system really requires a central creative flair and so far most of Mauricios attacking signings have been a bit wayward (Njie, Nkoudou, Janssen, Sissoko etc)

Close control, head up, vision, an understanding of what's around him, quick thought and twinkly toes are far more important than pace in this type of football. With the foundations Mauricio now has, including Foyth he has a lot of time on his side to ensure we go out and focus our scouting on pure craft and guile.

I wouldn't be surprised if he focuses on Spain, Argentina and Brazil as locations to unearth them from.

Barkley would need a lot of discipline to get into that way of playing. He has the tools to be able to fit into the CM/ AM alternating role. If he's happy to in such a disciplined set up is a different matter altogether

This also makes the signing of Foyth a great one as he's clean on the ball, aggressive and a perfect understudy for Jan and Toby. A team of soldiers if ever I've seen one!
