I'm not saying Townsend is a better player, but in that game, Lamela was disappointing (not interested in your explanation, as I'm sure we've seen it all before) and Townsend's arrival drove the opposition back. Regardless of the quality of it, he forced those defenders back into their box and it allowed our side more space to push up the pitch (including Ade's run that snagged Collins).
My point, which you continually refuse to address, is: why do you think Lamela deserves to start when he is quite clearly not your type of player? He has a great deal of potential, but, let's be honest, he's not a game-changer. I agree with you we don't have a left winger that is really of the calibre we need. I doubt Chadli comes good (or that he'll even stay on the team) and otherwise you've got Lennon and Townsend. Soldado can play the position and it's been proven just as many times as Kaboul playing RB has been.

Look around Europe man, no one is succeeding off the back of a "spine of units" and "battering rams" with a couple cute flicky players buzzing around in free roles around them. They succeed with structure in possession, creativity, and movement. We're struggling at the moment with some of these categories, yes, but it isn't simply because these players are small. The proof is all around you, but as you admit yourself you only watch Spurs and as such are unaware of the evidence against your plight.
