Always unnerving when someone leaves, especially when they arrived on the 'hype train'. Perhaps it was identified that our scouting department and processes needed an overhaul and Mitch was the man put forward for the job – seeing as did well at Southampton? Maybe his role and specialised skill has a life-cycle? He completed his job and feels it's running smoothly so time to apply his trade somewhere else, it's a very common process in normal business.

The way this is reported, a tweet from Levy referring to him as 'Mitch' would suggest they are pals and it hasn't turned to shit. The ES is reporting he got the hump when we missed out on Batshu but don't think he was ever a serious target. It takes more talent to grab a player from an obscure league than take the biggest loud mouth on Twitter aka Manure...

I my world he's role should based on a given budget be to find possible interesting players, evaluate them against the manager's (Poch) wishlist, evaluate them together with the manager, make an estimate of how much the club are willing to pay for the player. Than to contact the agent, the club, negotiate both with the player and the club and finally sign the agreements. Maybee leave the signing to the chairman (Levy)

I think Levy is doing much more than sign the agreements and thereby from Mitchells point of view stealing the most intresting part of he's job.
My speculation ... Levy and the football people take a completely different view on negotiations. Given their backgrounds this would not be surprising.
The football side: we want player X, if we have to spend a bit more than the budgeted amount to get the target then OK, let's do it.
The business side (Levy): we set a budget for a good reason. If we can't get the player inside the agreed budget, walk away.

With the current emphasis on bringing new players in via the youth system I guess Mitchell was wondering what exactly was he here for...I'd be more worried if McDermott left to be honest...

My thinking is along those lines as well. Although, were do get the "gardening leave" bit from? What I mostly noted in the actual quotes was Mitchell saying: "I have greatly enjoyed my time at the club and it will continue to be my sole focus until such time as I move on to new challenges". Could be seen as gardening leave, but also that it's all more non-controversial than it might at first seem.

It's all speculation at this point, but for what it's worth I think, the key to this whole thing is Poch's changed title when he renewed his contract. Again, just wild speculation, but I'd say Poch came in as kind of a chance for Levy to take, and thus he didn't want to hand too much responsibility to Poch at first. On the other side of that Poch was use to a European set-up with a DoF, so was fine with it as well. Poch has now spent two years on trimming the squad of bad apples, getting all the players and staff on board with his vision, and worked closely McDermott to make the youth set-up part of that vision as well.

When it came time to extend his own contract, he might have felt, he had all the fundamentals in place in all the departments, and wanted a bigger say in the incoming transfers, which is probably the non-first team area affecting him the most any way. Hence, the new role as manager and Mitchell and McKenzie might just have felt Poch is taking over part of what they felt, they initially joined Spurs to do. So they cannot see themselves being challenged in it any more and/or felt promises as to their roles where broken.
All valid point My notion of a gardening leave came from Official statement noting the departure was on a future date, but the date was unspecified.

I think, given you don't want other clubs knowing your cutting-edge IP, keeping Michell off the market for a brief period to allow the club to move past him might be the approach they're taking.

But it is just speculation on my part.

He also quit southampton. Did his dream job turn into a nightmare there?
Rob MAcKenzie left Leicester to join us. Did his job there come a nightmare?
When the two miracle workers left their respective clubs to come here there was no talk of nightmares and interference.
That's what these people do, they get bored and move on.
Maybe it was getting hard for them working on a budget due to obvious financial restraints?
Steve Walsh has just left the champions and a club he loved for Everton. Why?
You'd have thought that there would have been more of a sensational story to make up there. Especially after LCFC refused to let Everton speak with him and not wanting the man who got Kante, Mahrez and Vardy gone.
A lot more disharmony.
So, why did Walsh leave. Was his dream job turning into a nightmare and the thai dictator annoying him?
No, he just wanted to move on an start fresh.

Reports that he lost faith when we lost Batshuayi which, if true, leaves me thinking he's never watched how Chelsea conduct their business.

Spurs identify promising attacking player, and careful transfer discussions are made with an eye to a deal.
Chelsea catches wind, swoops for said player, offering 10m pounds more and double or triple the wages.
Player signs for Chelsea, sits on bench, lets their career wither away.
Eventually moves to China because nobody else is willing to meet their stupid wage demands.

:levylol:What odds on Levy setting the scene to swoop in and sign a VDV type signing to show 'Mitch' and Co. How it's done. Basks in the acclaim and drops the mic. Wouldn't put it past him. Roll on Aug 31st.

I mean, anyone that signs up to work with Levy has to know what they're getting themselves into.

So I'm not buying the whole lost faith in our transfer policy narrative.

I think that it's a case of, if you want to be a strong Sporting Director/Director of Football type, we are simply not the club for you. We have a very involved owner, and a very involved manager. I don't see the space necessary for one to work within. If you have aspirations of being an English Monchi, and I think Mitchell and Mackenzie both do, then you're going to have to go out to go up.

It's a real pity no one has a screenshot of his deleted tweet where he claimed yesterday that Mackenzie left the club 2 months ago. If he had done, I hardly think Lyall or anyone else is sitting on that kind of a scoop.

No one on the outside really knows, and they're all throwing their opinions against the wall and seeing which narrative sticks.

What utter bullshit of a piece from Lyall there. The strained relationship between recruitment and board manages to make one sentence. Even then it's conjecture from 'Sky Sources'. No real quotes and also the piece highlights the work still being done in a professional manner.

Also saying that Mitch and the BB scouted Alli, when it was Pleat. Then saying the likes of Toby was scouted, he's been a fine defender for all to see for years before he joined us.

Blimey
