The nickname exiles derives from the fact that in 1989 the original incarnation of Newport County went bust. Unfortunately only a year or so prior to this, clubs could fold as their original form and open up as a new limited company from that year - that's how Bristol City trade under Bristol City 1986 and I think Middlesborough did the same.
When we went bust, the club had to be reformed and start from scratch but the Welsh FA tried to force us into the Welsh football pyramid, along with a number of other clubs who become known as the irate 8. They went on to form the Welsh premiership but Newport refused and as such were banned from playing in Wales and had to play in near by Gloucestershire and that's where the nickname exiles comes from.
It is said that John Aldridge (former player) bought the rights to the name Newport County back for the club and we're also known as the ironsides, a nickname that referenced our old ground at Somerton Park being adjacent to Cromwell Road.
It took us 25 years to get back into the football league, our badge shows the year we were formed, 1912 and the year we were reformed, 1989. Newport has a partizan fan base, passed down from generation to generation.
People from Newport are proud and having County in the football league means everything - to draw Spurs in the cup is massive and will be talked about for years.
Local rivals are Cardiff City, Bristol Rovers and to an extent, Swansea.
There are countless pubs and bars in the city, the ground is within a 5 minute walk of the centre and pretty much easy as it gets to navigate from the train station - barring an escort.
It will be a great occasion and it seems to have caught the footballing worlds imagination, which can only be a good thing for both clubs.
We came back from 14 points a drift last season to stay in the football league with a last minute winner in the final game. We have kicked on from that and are challenging for promotion this season with some of the best football I've seen for years.
Hope that fills you in on a few things about the County.
