Let's say we are still languishing around 14th come Christmas. Surely a financially backed January transfer window and the challenge of securing us a top six finish this season would be a tempting challenge for any new manager coming in ??.
Then if he succeeds we discuss a long term contract.
Just a thought.....

No because he might not fit so we shouldn’t commit to a long term contract because we have that now but give him a try yes
Can just give him a 2/3 year contract to start rather than one season, any manager that is employed, nobody knows if it will work out, it's a bit of a leap of faith. Can't just go giving them short term contracts to see if they work out, for one we'd go even further behind by not trusting the coach to spend in the transfer window, we'd have more problems with players not wanting to commit because they don't know if the manager is going to be there next season or not.

I take your point but isn’t that what we’ve got now with Poch threatening to leave after the CL final?

I don't know what he was thinking of

For a year or two.

Comes in, gives a big boost initially, levels out the next season, drops off the one after that.

The test with Rogers starts next season.

This can be said about a lot of coaches though. Mourinho's teams also suffer in their third season, but this hasn't stood against them winning trophies.

The thing is, it is quite rare to find a coach that can keep a team performing constantly while also being able to recycle the squad successfully and adapt to the game. Alex Ferguson is the prime example and he was brought up here plenty of times.

What we should ask ourselves is the following: do we realistically expect our next coach to be a 5+ years appointment like Poch? I find it unlikely. Bringing in someone who can improve us in a short time regardless of what happens after two or three years might not be such a bad idea.
