Our main failing this season is failing to get Benteke.
Soldado is world class but for our system we need a hammer not a scalpel:soldadowatch:
Still think he will get 15-20 goals in the PL this year but Benteke's sheer presence would of been a huge asset.
Soldado has had a good career before Spurs but he is not 'World Class' in my book. World class players can play on any team and adapt their game, as good as he is at what he does well (box striker) I can't see him doing that any time soon.
Plus a world class player would not have been left out the Spain team as often as he has done when Torres was in the worst form in the world.

Not slagging him off here, just trying to be realistic and see things for what they are

I am also not buying all this talk about Lennon and Townsend or Lamella playing as 'proper wingers' I think that will just see them run down blind alleys or hot crosses that are either blocked or under/overhit. When was the last time we were beating teams week week out from crosses? A good while. I think a bigger problem is our very deliberate play from defence to midfield which is so slow we can't ever expose any space further up the pitch and the players are just constantly squeezed where ever they go as the oppositions defence has, by that point, had plenty of time to get organised enough to make life very had for us

Obviously there are more things to do...like bring in Heyneckes as a "consulting" coach...its great that AVB is so young and has gotten this far with a short time under Mou, but maybe he needs alittle bit more learning from an experienced and world class manager just to take him (and us) to the next proverbial level.

I wouldn't at all be opposed to this option. It also might just be what we need.
Anyway, if Levy ever is to make a drastic move like sacking AVB, he should first try such a plan B before anything else, as Fulham have done recently.

By playing Dembele, Eriksen, Lennon and Lamela together for a sustained period of time
While we all may have our own preferred combination ... I think the point is getting some rhythm going.

Even if things are going good or bad, AVB has to continue playing a group of player together regularly ... we need to form an understanding before anything else.

Think whoever was brought in would essentially need to be picked by AVB as seemed to be te case with Baldini

Some bits from John Crace's blog on ESPNFC:

If AVB is so sure of the system he wants to play, why aren't his players on his wavelength? The only possibilities are that (A) they don't understand what the manager wants, (B) they understand exactly what he wants but don't believe in it, or (C) they aren't technically good enough to play the way AVB wants. At the moment, the jury is wavering between B and C.

Make no mistake, Spurs do have structural problems. Having no replacement left-back for Danny Rose -- who is himself something of a makeshift left-back -- has been a huge error of management. Left-back is a specialist position, and opposition teams have begun to increasingly exploit Tottenham's weaknesses in that area. Jan Vertonghen is a centre-back, not a left-back, and no amount of wishing will make it otherwise.

The midfield is also a mess. Paulinho looks like a man who isn't sure whether he's supposed to be attacking or defending and ends up doing neither very well. Moussa Dembele's confidence is shot to pieces; his right leg now seems as if it is only there for balance, and opposition defences know that all they have to do is block him from moving left. Lewis Holtby is ineffectual. Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli look as if they have been bought to be transferred in the summer. Sandro is left to look on in desperation, forced into one reckless tackle after another to try to shore things up. He was lucky not to have been sent off against City.

We just need to attack quicker - we do it so slowly that the defence have time to pass wriiten notes to each other explaining what our tactics are. We are so feeble near the goal that all those stats about "shots" are meaningless - most of our shots are woeful.

AVB seems to have a an anal strategy to carefully construct a goal with precise passing - rather than running fucking fast down the wings and whipping in crosses. It doesn't help that Lennon, Walker or Townsend can't cross (not sure about Lamela yet) so maybe that's the reason he uses congested middle of the field passing tactics. It's really shit to watch - and clearly fucking useless - so he'd better come up with something new.
exactly... when was the last time we scored from on the break, or quickly?
Even if not on the break, when was the last time we scored with quick, incisive passing and stretched a team.
I'm gutted because I want him to be our man, our Clough, but sadly, I think he's been so focused on his way, even if he was to radically re-think his tactics, it would add to even more confusion amongst the players, send mixed messages, and make them further question his credentials, just on the basis that it undermines his previous beliefs.

That goal away at Villa, finished by Rafa, what an amazing counter attacking goal that was, will be a while before we see a goal like that I think...

So who do you guys think will score our goals this season? I'm very happy that we have strenghtened the defence, and if we can get another CB in it would leave us in a strong position. But last year we scored about the same amount of goals as Southampton and Swansea. United scored 9 more than us, Everton 6 and Woolwich 13 more. Of course, if we become less hilarious/tragic in defense we don't need so many, but the amount of players with goals in them are a bit worrying. Right now I would say the following players are to be relied upon:

Adebayor
Eriksen

and then:

Paulinho (maybe)
Kane (maybe)
Holtby (maybe)
Soldado (maybe)

You could add the likes of Chadli and Townsend to that list, but we have very few consistent goal scorers. Is that good enough for our ambitions? I would love to get a winger/striker in who is lethal in front of goal. Remy is a risky buy, but might be the best we can get. Thoughts?
