Udogie also missed a few games as well during the peak of the crisis.
He was injured when we beat Palace.
Sent off during the Chelsea game so didn't miss it as such, then missed Wolves through suspension.

Otherwise he missed the Everton home game we won but played in every other game.

It was just 1 game he missed during our crisis. Felt like more because of how crippled our back line was.

72 points would be incredible.

We'd only have bettered that points total 3 times in the entire clubs history.
80+ points would be incredible.

74 would be 2 points per game, which is good but certainly not incredible and we are capable of more.

72 I'm left thinking we should have done better as it would be worse (1.86) than our first 23 games (1.91).

We should be better in these closing 15 games with players back and time playing the system.

It'd be the 4th best points total in the club's 141 year history in a season where we've lost our best ever goalscorer and had to deal with months of injuries and missing players.

That's quite frankly incredible when you consider most people before the season started would have been happy with just seeing a vision in place in a year of transition.

80+ would quite frankly be a miracle.

72 would be expected according to this guy's model. I guess anything above that would be good based on how we have played so far and anything below would be bad. If we consider injuries we can at least hope to get above expected from here.

The fact we could end the season with 72 points and that it's now somewhat expected is incredible in itself.

Do you remember pre season of 2023?

Doubts about Ange. All the toxicity around the fanbase towards the club. Kane leaving. Getting the cheap options in. Son is past it. No first team striker signing, Richarlison is shit. Porro and Udogie in a back four, Gulp.

4th best points total in the club's entire history. Off the back of what I witnessed 7 months ago? I'd have laughed right in your face.

You can't say 141 year history. I would give you 43 years going back to 1981 when it changed from 2 points to 3 for a win.

Should we get 72 points, 3 of those 4 seasons would be in the last 8 years.
Says a lot about Levy's ownership to me, though some would hate to hear that because you don't get trophies for growing significantly as a club.

But going back to 15/16 season our point totals have been;
70 - 86 - 77 - 71 - 59 - 62 - 71 - 60

I don't think 72 could be seen as incredible honestly give its only 1-2 points more than 3 of those seasons. It's a decent tally, but we are better than that.

Fair enough

And how many of those seasons saw us lose our best ever player and goalscorer and a season ravaged by injuries, suspensions and international tournaments?

In the context of the expectation on this team before the season started. The toxicity running through the fanbase. The doubts over the manager. Losing our best footballer and our top goalscorer over the last decade, the perception of our squad, the injuries and suspensions and missing players throughout the season, I'd say it was incredible.

If I told anyone in the summer that we'd not only get top four, but we'd get our 4th best points total of the last 45 years, our third best ever in the Premier League era I'd have been fucking laughed at.

Next season, 72 likely wouldn't be incredible. Hence, context

Yeah whilst I agree with the pre season expectations, we are where we are now and that is context.

Though I would actually argue Bale is our best ever player - and when we lost him we put down 69 points with a manager sacking, 3 points fewer than the 72 we achieved with him the season before.

We could put down near relegation form for the remaining 15 games, pick up 17 points and still better last seasons total of 60 points whilst finishing 8th given where we are now.

As it goes, we actually achieved fewer points the year we sacked Poch and brought in Mourinho picking up 59 - but that was enough for 6th that season so probably wasn't seen so much as a failure.
Had we kept Conte I don't doubt we would have finished with more than 60 points last season, but that's irrelevant to me as it was shit.

The great thing about this season in terms of expectations is how we play. Even if we did only pick up 16 points from our next 15 games, end the season on the same points as last season - I would still have preferred this season significantly.

Here are our best finishes in the top flight. Most of them under ENIC.

We're gonna need to learn how to keep clean sheets PDQ if we want to get top 4, lets be serious.
Idea's of 2.5ppg for the next ten games is pie in the sky with how porous we currently are.

We had 5 early in the season and even up to Christmas Vicario had the most CS in the Prem.
Pickford and Everton have the most and they only have 8.

Last 2 games were annoying for sure but with the Back 4 together, we are going to pick them up again soon

We've currently conceded on average 1.5 goals per game.
Last season, where our defence was appalling, we conceded 1.7
Worryingly close, isn't it. Especially when you consider we did look tighter earlier in the season. Although I felt back then we looked less like scoring a lot of the time.

If I could be arsed I'd prefer to look at that 1.5 vs league average. My feeling is that goals scored are up across the board this season. For us, the start of the season needs to be our target and if we get to the end of Feb and we are still conceding twice a game with our full back 4 in place, then sure that is worrying.
For now, IMO, it's just watch and see before reaching many conclusions.

If we are playing good football and winning games that's the big thing at this point of the Ange rebuild. That's all he's ever spoken about at least.
