Evidently he's not available on the cheap.

We'd be buying a player we believe can become a starter.

Question is a) how real is that potential? ...£40m real?

b) ...Do we have more urgent, immediate needs to focus that kind of money on?

I
I think the real question is what does 40m get you in this crazy market. When they are talking Zaha at 60/65 million and a goalkeeper for 70 mil! It doesn’t surprise me the likes of young “ home grown” young possible starlets are being quoted at 40m. Hopefully we will get him for a little less. But to be honest I think 30 mil is better than 60 for Zaha or a 100 for Martial?

Biggest problem with FFP was it was brought in to late. The writing was on the wall when Chelsea came about what was gonna happen. Instead they waited until the like of City and PSG ruined the transfer market to do anything about it. Basically making football a cartel where the rich clubs control everything, and the old historic clubs like us Liverpool in the PL and Dortmund and Atletico abroad are constatly playing catch up knowing that the cartel clubs are always trying to steal our players to remove us as threats. And then the clubs like us have basically been condemned to mediocrity for life

Had not City gotten their ill-deserved money and caused turmoil amongst the "top four", it would have been much harder for a club like ours to qualify for the CL. When the previous top four was no longer guaranteed their spots and when players could get bigger paychecks elsewhere, it made the top four have to fight harder to retain and obtain players. They failed, one after the other, in this slightly more open market, which is part of the reason we are were we are at the moment.

Football is less of a cartel then it was pre influx of money for PSG and City. The old rich controlled everything then. They are still trying desperately to keep and increase their control (see FFP, see CL seedings, see the new club world cup format that is in the works). Previously they have also worked hard to increase their power and wealth, such as with new formats to European Cups, seedings to those tournaments, new format to national leagues, attempts to get more of the TV money distributed to the biggest clubs, etc.

Imflux of money to lesser clubs from rich investors evens the game out more, making it harder for the select few old elite clubs.

It has been great for the game.

Not sure I've seen more rubbish written in one post in this thread before. And that's saying something!
