I completely agree that using colours as a sign of support and belonging is useful and, if done right, heightens the value of the club brand. I support other teams (from other sports too) and often wear the colours to the games. Only in the case of spurs the fanbase seems a bit more indifferent about using our colour. We just beware of using red. I would encourage the guys to put a little effort in it and show the colour white.
