I disagree.
It was the terrible transfer window of 2019, when we began spending again, that put us in free fall: N’Dombele, LoCelso, Sessegnon, Clarke and then Bergwijn. An absolutely disastrous year.
There has not been one top tier signing since Son and Alderweireld(?). Not one of PEH, Kulu, Berg, Porro etc. comes close to peak Wanyama, Dembele, Rose, Walker, Eriksen, Dele etc.

We've been hanging on by a thread for over half a decade just off the back of Son, Kane frankly, the likes of Sissoko, Davies, Lloris etc. who are a legacy of better times. Without them we're Everton level of shit.

There's countless quotes from Bastoni and his agent last season saying he wants to stay with Inter.

I get that Tonali wants to make his daddy proud, but I haven't seen anything like that from him in the press this summer.
There would have been the very same quotes from Tonali had Newcastle not fronted up the 70m (and whatever else they paid on the side).

They’d have been even more believable from Tonali.

You’re implying that players will move for the right money under any circumstances. They won’t. I am using Modric — who has been offered silly money to go to Saudi — to prove a point.
Bastoni point blank refused to move. Not to us. Not to anyone. It was made clear repeatedly and I have offered you an explanation as to why. You can accept it or use a transfer relating to a different player under different circumstances to confirm your bias.
Modric is at Real Madrid. He’s already at the best club in the world earning amongst the best wages in the world and Real don’t need the money for him to go.

Tonali didn’t go because he wanted to move, he went because Milan got the money they wanted.

You are clinging on to a naive view that you felt safe with… I get it.

Did anyone really think this was happening?

It’s not about where the club is. Although, if it were then you weaken your own argument because Inter are clearly ahead of us (domestically and internationally) and were last summer.

The fact that Milan get 70m (in one lump or more) has no bearing on whether Tonali would accept a move. Some players at any given time, due to their circumstances, will move to a specific club for a larger pay packet and others, due to their circumstances, won’t move.
It’s why we have a good shot at getting Maddison, who for personal reasons, prefers to move to London over Newcastle.
