Christian Eriksen believes Harry Kane has been the most impressive forward in Europe this season.
Kane has 28 goals in 49 matches in all competitions for Tottenham, helping them to the brink of a second-place finish in the Premier League. If the 22-year-old scores at Newcastle on Sunday, it will be his 50th top-flight strike.
Eriksen has been Spurs’ main creative force again this season, registering 14 assists. He and Kane have a fine understanding and the Dane said: “He has been the best all-round striker this season. He is one of the best out there, if not the best.
“He is confident, he has a great work-rate, his technique is good, as is his physical ability. He is a striker who can do everything — passing, tackling, scoring goals.”
Kane’s form means he is virtually certain to lead the line for England at Euro 2016 in France.
The challenge will test Kane’s endurance, after nearly two years without an extended break from football.
Last summer, Kane played for his country in the European Under-21 Championships, even though Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino would have preferred him to miss the tournament as it followed Kane’s first full season of top-level football.
He has not missed a single league game for Tottenham this season and, as the club’s sole senior centre-forward, has played an important role in the other competitions, too.
Eriksen understands the demands international tournaments can place on young players.
He was named in Denmark’s squad for the 2010 World Cup aged only 18 and also played at Euro 2012 two years later — Denmark’s last appearance at a finals. But Eriksen is confident Kane can cope — and he believes England have a good chance of glory. The playmaker added: “Harry doesn’t care about holidays. He just wants to play football.
“You are tired at the end of those tournaments, especially the first one you play, and it depends how far you go, of course.
“But Harry knows what it is like, having played in the Under-21 competition. I know the level is different, but the feeling is the same.
