Sorry mate but you need to play the 'we invented the language, deal with it' card...

They do have us on 'lieutenant' though. As it derives from the French word "lieu" meaning 'instead of', pronounced "lee-uh". How the frig we [English] can justify pronouncing a loan word our own way ("lef") is beyond me.
 
My posts were a poor attempt at oblique humor aimed at exactly this sort of pointless discussion. Fanny is a funny word.

I think we pronounce it that way so the person doesn't sound like he's a bum who lives in a toilet.
