Aim: To get #DavroAteMyHamster trending on Twitter
Why?: To promote The Fighting Cock Podcast/Website
How: Get as many people tweeting as possible

Rules to get it trending:
No Swears ANYWHERE it the tweet - that includes the work 'cock', so to link back to the website use this URL instead http://tinyurl.com/6emkfms

Vary the tweets and who you send them to. Don't only send them to everyone - tweet each other. Let all make sure we follow each other too.

it doesn't matter if you write it once in a tweet or 5 times - makes no difference so don't think that will help

Write different tweets, don't put the custom URL above in to every tweet - twitter will see this as spam.

We need a few hundred people to use the hash tag and a few more hundred tweets. Hopefully if it starts trending in London, people will ask what it means, which means it continues to trend.

http://blog.bufferapp.com/five-twitter-secrets-about-censored-trending-topics

From the above links -
1. You cannot trend a topic if you tweet more frequently.
This is tested and proved from my experience. Many people think that if you tweet more about a hashtag, like adding a hashtag to every tweet of yours, you can make that hashtag trend. Wrong. Hashtags depend to a certain level on frequency but that’s not all, they have to be diverse and collective. That means if you have five friends, and they add a hashtag to all of their tweets, its very unlikely that hashtag trends.

2. More than number of Tweets, its the number of people tweeting about a hashtag that matter.
That’s the most simple version of it. The most important factor for a hashtag (or topic) to trend depends on how many people are tweeting about it. And of course, the whole equation is relative to the number of people active on Twitter. But talking about things in perspective, its better to have 100 people tweet about a single hashtag less frequently, than 5 people tweeting the same hashtag more frequently to make it trend. The frequency becomes secondary nature here, but the volume or number of people tweeting is the primary focus.

3. More people, using the same hashtag, more frequently at a steady pace
That’s the formula if you are looking for one. Think about it, its natural is it not ? Let’s say we have an event like an Oscar night, and even without someone trying, its likely that more people from around the world tweet about it at the same time. That’s a natural trending topic. An artificial one (someone trying to game it) cannot possibly match the volume of a natural trending topic.

4. Size doesn’t matter but Time Zones does.
If you’re outside the U.S, you’d already know what I mean. Certain times are favourable for region specific natural trending topics. Let’s say an event that’s taking place in the U.S in the morning, will have a chance to trend naturally as more and more people start tweeting about it in the day time there. At the same time, its night/ dusk at other parts of the world, and it might not be wise to artificially trend a topic at that time, as naturality favours the U.S twitter users. Similarly, for an event that’s happening let’s say in India during the afternoon would have a good chance to trend, with less effort that at night (in India).

But, how can I trend my own hashtag ?

That’s the question everyone asks. So you have a conference, or a tweetup, and you want to trend the hashtag, your buddies came up with. Here’s what you can try doing.

1. Select a time zone that’s favourable.
See what the trending topics are at the moment, is there a major event around the corner, or is there a major product release from Apple ? If there’s one, you might want to postpone your tweetup. If not, select the best time for it, let’s say if you’re in India, around afternoon might give you the best mileage.

2. Gather a group of interested people who can support you.
If possible, an influential guy on Twitter. Get him interested to your topic, or if he is not, convince him your cause and get him to tweet a few tweets for you around that time with the hashtag. Most people agree if they see something in return, like letting them start the hastag and getting the credit for it, while all you want is the topic to trend after his tweet.

3. Make it fun and open the hashtag to others to take away.
One mistake most people do (especially at conferences) is that they speak within their circle, not letting others join and leaving them to guess what’s going on. This might piss off people. Make it fun, ask questions, and allow more people to participate. Remember, the more the merrier.

4. Run a quiz, host a show.
This is a good strategy if you can pull it off well. Its easy to screw up but if you get the basics right, its easy to make it a success. It also depends a lot on what you can offer. You can either run a quiz, where one nominated person (or many) asks questions and seeks replies with the particular hashtag. If you can’t find people interested, add in some value by giving away a prize that fits your budget and is equally a pulling factor for others. For geeks things like an iPod, or a Gift voucher can work. Remember, its not about what you give but how you present it.

You can of course come up with something better than a quiz, just think about the ways to get more people interested, and break out from your circle, give people something to chew on and enjoy.

That will work, but apparently not if you use them both in the same tweet... the algorithm ignores it if you post more than one hashtag as it assumes you are just spamming hashtags to sell viagra.. or some such

This could work... if there was a prize.. get all spurs fans tweeting
We could have people ask @bobbydavro1 questions and everyone use the #fdavro hastag... best one chosen by the TFC crew wins a prize of some sort.

Might be a good time to do it during the Rubin Kazan game? 5pm, people still at work, lots of spurs fans on twitter keep track of game etc

Tell me what to do!

1) We need a time... preferably when people from all over the world will be at a computer and can join in

Next Weds at 3 was suggested on the podcast, will be 10am East Coast USA so should be a good time and fine for Europe

2) We need a hash tag that hasn't got a swear in it
#FDAVRO #DAVROEATSHAMSTERS - may also want to avoid using the word cock in any tweets - i think Twitter looks for any swears or naughty words or spam in tweets and wont count tweets that include them in trending topics - although they will obviously still be visible

3) We need as many people as possible (just typing the hash tag over and over in the same tweets won't work... we need numbers)

Make sure we promote before hand... tweet about it before/after/during the Spurs game when fans will be most active. Tweet about it on the hour every hour on the actual day and once or twice the day before. Need to get hundreds of people involved. Is there a way to record a short 3min podcast message that can go up and iTunes the day before? This will automatically download to most peoples iTunes folders and they'll listen and get the message

Get people who can't tweet at the exact time.. and for say an hour after, to usehttp://twittimer.com/ to set a timed tweet message to go live. Also if people have more than one twitter account make sure they use it... or set a few dummy ones up - we'll literally double numbers if everyone has a dummy account.

4) We need to get others who may not know about TFC using the hash tag - set up a competition and ask them to use the hash tag when they enter, that we we get spurs fans and randoms

Is there a price we could give out for the best tweet? Preferably something Spurs related, rather than podcast related, that way it'll get other Spurs supporters involved and not just listeners.

We could also do with a celebrity or player asking Davro for a retweet as far more people would see it. Anyone got any connections with Spurs players?

5) We need an aim... get a retweet from Bobby Davro, but also to promote the podcast and website.

Maybe take a good cop bad cop routine - mix it up a bit. If we can get the hashtag trending it should keep trending for a while as people start to ask what #DAVROEASTSHAMSTERS or #FDRAVO or #TFC means...

EDIT: Also we should come up with a couple of standard tweets for people to use (not retweet, actually copy and use themselves) - people are inherently lazy, so make it easy for people to get involved.

So what's the hash tag we're trying to get trending?

Ladybethny is suggesting #DavroAteMyHamster because a google search for that brings up TFC.

Makes sense.

everyone seems to think we're doing it 2100 GMT, maybe we should just do it at that time as a test run, next time we 'll give it some more thought in terms of syncing it with the US so our chances of a TT are that much higher.

It could take ages to get the message out that the time has changed.

#Davroatemyhamster 9pm Wednesday - anyone who has Tweetdeck on their computer can also automatically set a timed tweet, so even if you aren't near a computer/phone you can help out
