Thats the problem with instant replay across sports. When slowed down with multiple camera angles everything looks dramatic, everything seems like blatant cheating. Which leads to trying to amend a logical set of rules to microscopic freeze-frame examination which just leads you down the path of good-intentions farther and farther from the point of the rule to begin with.Standard of refereeing is dogshit everywhere. I just get the impression that following the introduction of VAR there seem to be constant changes in interpretation of the rules for things like offsides, handball and penalties. The result seems to be that honest refs have a greater chance of making genuine errors through being confused whilst corrupt refs have the opportunity of using a lack of clarity around such changes as a cover for their cheating.
Instant replay is great in black/white binary decisions such as its used for in tennis, goal line tech and cricket. The ball is either in or out, hit or not. VAR can be very good at onside/offside, and could be better with further development.
Instant replay is shite when utilized to make judgement calls and just ends up making a fucking mess of everything. We don't have fewer bad decisions anymore, we just have different bad decisions and refs that vaccilate between unwilling to admit their mistakes and afraid to make a mistake so they swallow their whistle.
