That is true, sure. But it's not like we were that great defensively from about game 6 or 7. Conceding 2 goals a game is awful.
Not at all, we have a squad full of clowns for defense.
But for the other guy to say, word for wore that "conte makes players worse" is factually wrong.

We were worse before he came and worse after he left. While he was here we were a top 4 team, at one point stringing probably 20 games together like a team chasing the title.
I don't care if people didn't like the visuals of it, we were a better team with him than before or after he came.

If people don't like the style, that's fine, I get it and wasn't keen. But he knew where the weakness was in the squad and did what was needed to address it. It's a shame he never had some proper leader defenders. We may have seen something different from the rest.

Rather we took £10m and he went Spain or Turkey than £12m and Russia. Can’t send him there, would be so wrong.
We aren't "sending" him anywhere, if he goes it's because he's agreed to the move, if he doesn't want to go to Russia then he can just reject and then we either accept the next best offer or hold out and hope someone else matches this bid at some point.

He ain't being trafficked...

But I do know trends. And one trend is that when a player is touted to all the top clubs and very well known in transfer rumor circles, but doesn’t have any concrete offers, that’s a red flag. Teams have done their due diligence, there wouldn’t be so many links if they hadn’t. And they all decided to shop elsewhere. That says something. No one has actually made a real offer to Celta yet.

You could say that about the majority of our signings, even the best ones. Everyone looked at Berbatov and Bale, Ferguson deeply regretted not following up Utd's initial interest before we signed them. Modric the same, many looked, plenty of hype but we were the only ones who pulled the trigger. Eriksen too.

We have to accept that we can only sign talented players if our big money or more successful rivals don't go head to head with us. We can always be outbid by clubs with higher salaries and history of success.

With regards to Veiga, it seems we are interested as are Chelsea and Man City. If either one of those clubs decided to buy him we would have no chance of competing. If they ultimately decide he is a talent but don't want him this summer then we can get him. The lad has a lot of qualities, you've highlighted one concerning aspect about his passing and that may well be the reason why Chelsea and City decided not to go for him. However we are a club that has to take that risk and hope to improve the player in time.

Same with our CB targets. Many top clubs have looked at Tapsoba and VDV, Liverpool heavily linked with both, but they are still there on the market and haven't moved. If we sign one or both it's only because we had no eventual competition from rival teams. That's the market we operate in and that's our place in the market

But we can't afford a combined £75m for Tapsoba and VdV according to the internet???

My advice for sanity reasons, don't believe anything you read on the internet!!!

Here’s my only thing on Veiga. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a talent. Physically gifted, has an innate sense to arrive on crosses, tidy finisher, quick feet, energetic, all-around.

However - he doesn’t do any work in the first phase of buildup and is not a deep midfielder whatsoever, an 8 who needs to be advanced and not particularly gifted with passing or vision. Yeah, that can still be a great profile, but something about him screams to me the same uneasy feeling I had about Jenas, Paulinho, Dele, more recently Matheus Nunes, where they have these gaudy G/A totals but don’t really impact games as much as you’d think.

My issue is what does he excel at? Our best midfielders have always been specialists. Eriksen, Dembele, Luka, Carrick, Ginola, VDV, Gazza, Hoddle, Mackey etc. you can point to all of them and say, he was very close to the best in the world at this specific part of the game, be it dribbling, close control, stamina, long range shots, vision, tackling, crossing, free kicks, etc. Each one of them had something truly special in them, they were all well-rounded too, but each of them had that piece of true clsss in their locker that made them unique to any other midfielder in the world.

Veiga I don’t think has that, or at least, I question what his stand-out skill is.

And here’s why I’m cautious. Hasn’t he been linked with all the top clubs? All of them? City, the Spanish giants, Woolwich, Bayern I believe, Liverpool, the hits keep on coming. Why hasn’t anyone pulled the trigger on him, the summer where he was supposedly the darling of half of Europe? That concerns me.

He’s probably better than Gallagher tbf. But I don’t feel he’s a star. Look below, those are shocking passing statistics!

I’m not sure he’s better than Gallagher yet but has a much much higher ceiling. As does Sarr btw. Sarr is more rounded than Veiga imo

Not sure I agree he doesn’t get involved in deep buildup. I think he does but more as a ball carrier. He’s quick and has a serious burst with the ball. I think dribbling and carrying are his elite attributes. The passing will come.

Dele is a decent comp tbh because he also loves to put a shift in pressing.

I’d prefer to spend money on him instead of Gallagher just for the ceiling but would be fine with giving Sarr the minutes too.

If we are spending money on a CM that’s ready now, Koopmeiners would be my choice.

Bayern are a proper club - elite, one of the 5 biggest on the planet. Recent CL win.

PSG would be a horrible move for him. The league is a total nothing, they're nowhere near the top 5 biggest clubs and they have no European titles.
The right club for him, in my opinion, is the club that pays Tottenham the most money for him...

Gallagher isn't happening, we can all relax.

I wouldn't relax just yet. Don't be surprised if Levy finds the money to sign someone like Gallagher especially if Ange really wants him. Forget about our need for top centre backs, or any centre backs for that matter, it's would be typical of this club to go and buy Gallagher. Especially if it means Levy beats West Sham to his signature, he would love that.

Gallagher would obv prefer Spurs too

Might as well keep Hoejberg if Koopmeiners is the best we can do. A thoroughly uninspiring choice.
