a Defensive Midfielder?

For playing in front of the back four, we already have Dier, Wanyama, Dembele and Winks. Dier can't get a look in at that rate, either.

Are you from a parallel universe? I'd say they're the three positions we don't really need to buy

it might be an unpopular opinion, but I think we've been waiting years now for Moose to just 'click' and turn into a match winning player.

He's one of those players that flirts with the cusp of being a brilliant player. I can't quite place it, but he just doesn't quite have that thing that makes him undroppable - like the ability to score a goal, or to start a break. He can dribble and pass, but spends a lot of matches acting like a dad playing a match against 10 year olds (like he's holding back). Can't quite put my finger on it.

That's one of the best descriptions of Dembele I have seen. Brilliant player maybe our most talented but flawed in an odd way, it's almost as if he is too good on the ball and therefore doesn't release it or move it quick enough.

That being said he is still one of our best players, Winks however offer something different, a get go type player who will control the game with passing and movement rather than strength and dribbling.

For me competition is vital, Dembele needs a player who can cover him and compete with him.

How are these two going to take us to the next level?

We need players who are going to come in and overtake what we HAVE. We need to stop buying players who will just come to sit on the bench and have no hope of overtaking those in front of them.
I'm talking back-ups here. It's pretty obvious that Davies and Wimmer are leaving this summer

Maguire has looked a really solid player for a while now. He's shown more than Wimmer in the pl

I don't really think so, especially if we take the Wimmer of last season into consideration. Maguire likes to make runs forward but they're not like Vertonghen or King, they are completely kamikaze and he rarely maintains possession. Wimmer could do the same eye-catching stuff but Poch would murder him.

But there is hardly anything in it, it's like selling a decent player for a decent player. Zero improvement when it comes to moving us to the next level. We need to sign players who are going to potentially push our first team centre halves to the bench, to potentially push our midfielders to the bench etc. Not players who are signed for the bench.. (Janssen, Nkoudou etc)

Maguire isn't designated for the bench, he's really young for a cb and could be a future starter

But I don't think he's that much better than Wimmer if better at all and he's probably not better than Dier in a back three either.

Remember, Maguire looked shit in a back two. Much like Dier does.

You're spot on and there has been numerous times this season where we've started with Dembele and only looked threatening and likely to score when he's been subbed off. West Ham at home for example.
I think Dembele is superb at all retention against the top teams. He keeps it tight and minimises damage from errors. But when the danger isn't there, his penetration isn't the best, and there are more potent options available.

Some actual star power needed in the summer. Hopefully Wembley and the lure of the new stadium should be enough, fingers crossed we manage to sneak in champions league football too.

I'll be watching Lyon when they take on Roma but I think Lacazette and Fekir are two we should absolutely be interested in.

Yes- exactly! Against the "Top 6" he is invaluable in nullifying their excellent midfielders. But against the smaller sides who aren't trying to attack, he's given the ball in an advanced role and struggles to integrate himself in our attack effectively. He has a hard time redistributing the ball quickly enough. It's like he plays as if he is Lebron or Kobe in an isolation set on the wing- everybody else back off and give me space as I stare this guy down and prepare to break his ankles. And then what? No plan usually- timid ball out to the wing, or a hospital ball to Eriksen in the middle.

At this point, and I am being serious, I would really like to see Winks in for him against all the lesser competition where we don't need two defensive midfielders. It might actually be good for Dembele anyways as he is not quite youthful anymore to play full 90's twice a week anyways.
