Priorities

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

You believe that prioritisation should be determined by the ease of which a trophy can be won?
There is an argument for that depending on the trophy and what comes with it.

What is off about this whole debate is that the thread starter and others are deliberately conflating the idea that "less of a priority" also means "doesn't matter and shouldn't waste time competing". We have enough squad depth to compete with weaker sides in the domestic cups. The domestic cups are less of a priority. But that doesn't mean that the club, and especially we as fans, should strut around with this chest beating bullshit that we are now too good for the lesser silverware and that it doesn't matter. That is the insidious narrative that has been driving this whole debate. I find it supremely arrogant and those inside and outside of club fandom who say Poch and these players need a trophy soonmer or later to show that that they are winner are absolutely right.

It's also small time thinking to act as if the smaller trophies are expandable because we have our sights set on the big ones. A true big club competes on all fronts and wins all the competitions along the way. Another bullshit narrative in this debate has been that think we should give all competitions some effort somehow means someone is arguing for the quadruple in one season. No, it means that none of the other top sides have sniffed at the domestic cups even if their fans have and even if they have fielded weaker sides in the earlier stages those weaker sides have still tried to compete. They have still gone on to win the domestic cups alongside bigger trophies or overall in a short period of seasons. Statistically every PL side that has competed in the CL over a sustained period has also picked up domestic cups along the way, irrespective of whether or not they have also won the league or CL in that period. If people want to act like we're a big club then realise that it's fine to want some competitions to be treated as more important than others, but it is not fine to use that as a reason to arrogantly pretend that some cups are now below us and can be cast aside. Nobody remembers the nearly men. A trophy win is always remembered, whichever one it is. A true PL "big club" wins the domestic cups on and off while they are also trying for and winning the league and CL on and off. That is true of Man U, Chelsea, Man City and to a lesser extent Liverpool and Woolwich (mainly the Liverpool and Woolwich of the early 2000s). If we truly want to be the big boys then that sort of trophy record is what we should aspire to, not trading off smaller competitions early in the season while acting like we can stroll the bigger competitions.

What is it with the attitude that the only thing that can bring glory is a trophy and anything less is underachieving? We are consistently finishing above teams who spend a lot more money than we do on transfers and wages. That to me is a sign of being successful. We get better every season and anyone who argues that Poch is unsuccessful because "what has he won" is a fucking tool.

Our priorities have to be the league and the champions league. Woolwich have a great record in the domestic cups over the last 4/5 years, but not one of their fans wouldn't swap places with us if they had the chance.

Right, so wanting to win a trophy and saying that a trophies is really what Poch should be achieving with the squad as strong as it is, playing as well as it is, now makes someone "a fucking tool"? WTF??

I never thought I'd see the day where a Spurs fan would cunt off other fans for having the audacity to want us to win trophies.

In fairness mate, I don't read a thing you post these days. You're constantly smug, condescending and self righteous. Did I say wanting to win a trophy makes you a tool? I said calling our current squad unsuccessful because of a lack of trophies makes you a tool. I'd expect a lawyer to have a better grasp of the English language, so next time you quote me, try not putting words in my mouth.

I'd take CL win and then coming 5th in the league.
But id also take winning the league and going out in the last 16 of the CL

Yeah, because that's not exactly what you do. I've told you before to stop responding to me, I've been happy to just ignore you. But you add nothing to this forum for me, and I'm quite happily going to just add you to my ignore list now. Enjoy knowing everything you joyless twat.
The heaps of irony here is outstanding. A guy whp turns up, cunts off fans, then throws more insults at the person who questions it and says it's all their fault.

Your self appointed snowflake status is a matter for you. Do what you must to shield yourself from my evilness!

Are you honestly saying we can't challenge for a title or CL before we win the Coconut Cup?

Those are the rules. How can we win the title if Poch hasn't won anything before? Don't you know that winning trophies is the only thing that means you can win a trophy.

We need to sack Poch and sign Van Gaal. That's the only way we can progress as a club. Or maybe we bring back Juande Ramos. He was a tremendous manager for us

I've seen nobody make that argument. Seems clear to me that what he's saying is that treating a competition as being irrelevant before you've managed to win it seems a bit arrogant, not that the league cup should be a priority. Apologies if I have missed the posts where the latter is posited.

Personally, I really dislike this repeated falsehood that people who still value the cups somehow see them as more desirable than the bigger competitions.
