I like to think i used to be a decent footballer and have an affinity with this great club. I could be a bit of a prat at times and Terry Naylor once threatened to punch my face in. Thank you.

It was unfortunate that he suffered a knee injury soon after joined and the crowd got on his back a bit (wankers).
71/72 he was unstoppable but still Billy Nick critisised him saying he could do more. Their relationship was strained to say the least but in later years he invited Bill and Darkie out to dinner at the suggestion of Mrs.C and they hit it off straight away. Anyone who witnessed Chiv leading out Bill at his testimonial could see what they meant to each other and what our club means to us all. That is one of my favourite Spurs moments ever, i am welling up here ffs.

I remember that.As you said,very very moving.
As Bills memorial service,,Can't remember if Chiv spoke at that or not.Greaves was funny,in a very respectful way.His recounting of when Cliff Jones went to ask for a rise was hiliarious.
For a while,,as in the early- mid 70s Martin Chivers name was one of the best known in English football.Certainly in the circles that this here young kid moved in.

Greavsie spoke certainly, Ledders and Stevie P also spoke as i recall.. I still have my ticket for that event and it takes pride of place in a frame with a double winning rosette on my mantlepiece at home. Alongside my kids of course.......................

Martin Chivers suffered a bad injury on 21 Sept 1968, not long after his transfer in the Jan of that year. Took quite a time to recover and regain his confidence, but when he did, what a player !

My dad says on his day big chiv was unplayable but he did struggle against the hard men. Also still raves that gilzean was the best header of a football he has ever seen........back when footballs were heavier as well!
Agree about Gilzean. What I remember about him was everyone in the ground including the opposition knew when we had a throw near the corner flag and Chivers took his time to come up and take it that it would be a long throw to Gilzean. Despite them marking him he still got the ball and sometimes scored direct. He was that good that he frequently scored from Chivers long throws.

I often wonder about that and his eventual tragic death from a brain tumour. Jeff Astle also suffered 'minor traumas' to his brain and death by industrial injury was given as the cause of his demise. It was also talked about regarding the passing of the great Danny Blanchflower who died of Alzheimer's disease in December 1993.

That ball on a wet day was like heading a cannonball. I remember playing and it was pissing down with rain and the pitch was waterlogged, puddles everywhere. We were awarded a corner and I took it. Instead of a short one I tried to get it into the box and did my hamstring lumping the bloody thing skyward.

I saw a recording of Spurs-Liverpool on a VHS tape. Chivers near the start of the game ran up and kicked 'hard man' Tommy Sm ith. It was a sore one, ref gave a foul.
Free kick went to Smith and Chiv ran up and kicked him again. Ref took Chivers' name. Tommy Smith had to go off injured. Must have been some previous. Spurs went on to win.
Great memories!

chivers European record finally broken. I was too young as a kid to truly appreciate what a fine player he was so has any one got any memories they wish to share.
