The Korean athletes of other sports were pretty unhappy that the 2002 WC team were let off their military service for their achievements but other teams who have actually won tournaments etc were not.

After that it was decided that only the Olympics and the Asian games would count towards this because it allows athletes from all (or most) sports the same opportunity.

I believe it was baseball that kicked up the biggest fuss, a sport that is taken very seriously in Korea and is probably more popular than Football. If my recollection is right they won an Asian games or world championship but were not rewarded, whereas the Korean football team were told prior to WC2002 that they would be rewarded for simply escaping the group.

So basically if Sonny doesn't win this one we lose him for 2 years some time very soon? What a kick in the stomach that will be, especially seeing as he could have been exempt of having to do his Military service if Leverkusen had let him play in these games 4 years ago :s

Brilliant finish

Where would you rank South Korea on their strength compared to other teams in this tournament pal? With how it sounds it looks like the odds are stacked against Son from achieving what he needs to

Before the tournament, the team was praised as "one of the best U23 teams we've ever had". It turned out it is one of the worst teams we've had. By just looking at the players' names, SK is the strongest out of all, but this team has never played together bf (no chemistry at all) + this manager doesnt know what he's doing...

Not sure how to rank the team.. But it seems like Uzis will make it to the finals easily.

Well hopefully they get better as the tournament goes on. Winning group games etc is all well and good, it's when it gets to the knockouts where form picking up and pressure really kicks in so it's still probably all to play for. Are you South Korean? If so best of luck with the outcome of these games

Gutted to hear that those January games don't give him a way out of military service. I struggle to see why we agreed to let him play in them if that's the case

The Asian Cup is an official FIFA full international event, and as such he has to be released by his club team if he is called up. The Asian Games is a U-23 event, and thus we did not have to release him.

He's in this situation to begin with because Leverkusen declined to release him for the 2014 Asian Games which South Korea won.

The group stages seemed pretty meaningless though. Almost impossible not to get out of the group. It's only now you really get to see how good teams are. The Uzbeks got turned over by Palestine recently so they can't be that good.

There was a bit of horse trading that went on - we let him go to this, he doesn't go to a couple of friendlies later in the year and I think he goes later to the January games than he would have otherwise... added to the fact this may mean he avoids MS.
