Monchi was the guy everyone wanted in his first Sevilla spell.

He’s known for success on a shoestring budget and being willing to sell anyone…

He’s fallen out of the limelight recently but did recently take Paratici to school with the Gil/Lamela deal.

That deal is what’s worrying about him imo. Being able to see there is still value in Lamela for La Liga as an older player at the other end of his career is one thing. In the Prem you need to find young athletes at the other end of their careers.
Yeah sure you can identify a player that can have a positive contribution from your villa in Spain, but can you do it on a cold wet Wednesday night in Stoke? Well, can ya Monchi???

Seems weird to me that we appoint a DoF to help appoint a manager. Surely we appoint a manager and he has a say in who he wants to be his helper. Or am I wrong ???
You're wrong, not that it's a bad idea for the manager and DoF to be on the same page, but the DoF is supposed to outlast managers, and be above them in the pecking order.

It would be like you getting to choose your boss. If anything it makes more sense to get DoF in, then manager in, than vice versa.

If you want to view the DoF as merely a helper, then it'd be much more appropriate to view him as Levy's helper, than the manager's helper.

If the manager should be above the theoretical DOF then they should not have that title, but rather something like head of player recruitment like what Hitchen had.

We had a top director of football who worked very well with Poch in Mitchell. But he made the mistake of thinking our owners had ambition and wanted good players, so the hobgoblin sacked him like he sacks everyone who threatens to take us to the next level, because that involves spending too much money. Perish the thought.

Mitchell wasn't a DOF
Mitchell isn't "top"

Tottenham identify Monchi as Paratici replacement

The 54-year-old is renowned as one of the smartest sporting directors in Europe, known to make extremely smart, yet bargain buys.

For instance, the Spaniard, who was employed by Sevilla and Roma, before returning to the Spanish side was responsible for the signings of Dani Alves and Ivan Rakitic to name a few.

As per a report by 90 Min, Monchi has emerged as a ‘serious contender’ to replace Fabio Paratici at Tottenham.

Yeah same thing, you can call a sausage a banger but it's still a chipolata!

No; not the same thing.

He was head scout. Not DOF.

He was a top man at his job.

He wasn't.....

What did he do wrong?

His time here was nothing special......

Couple of good bits in Trippier & Son.
.......And a couple of prem-proven tap-ins from Southampton in Vic & Toby.

What gems has he unearthed since?

Those are some pretty excellent buys in fairness.

Of all the various parties who have shuffled through the Spurs setup of Levy-DOF-Manager, there is really only one of them whose tenure was absolutely unalloyed, cut-and-dried in one direction or the other and that was the unimaginable catastrophe of Steve Hitchen.

Depends how you're judging I guess......

My Nan could have drawn the dots over Vic & Toby..... One was a prior 'Poch soldier' in the EPL and the other had been repeatedly linked to us with Saints doing the final EPL test-run on our behalf.

The guy was talked up and up over having some magic black book and having Europe licked, yet did the off, calling it a "nightmare" cos we expected more of him than breaking our wage-structure for more EPL tap-ins (Mane).

Even Trippier was on our proverbial doorstep. Son is the only true outlier (due credit for that, of course).

I'm not gonna go as far as to call Michell shit, but he does NOT warrant the amount of hype he gets.... Far from it.

We need a DOF who finds the the 4th choices that should be 1st choice.

This idea of shopping for players that Conte and other cheque book managers need is never happening.

THIS.

Regardless of other clubs buying 100m players; let's at least start consistently getting bang for our buck on all these 30, 40, 50, 60m purchases.

It's the costly duds that have been killing us.... Not George Kevin N'Koudou & Lewis Holtby.

If the club was ever going to invest in the playing squad to the level of shopping from the top shelf then those 100m players come with a higher % chance of working out. they just have a higher financial risk and not all work at that price either.

But there is no point having a DOF that specializes in knowing which one to spend 100m on.

We might as well just get on with it and try to go the Dortmund route instead of the Bayern route.

He wasn't head scout at all he was a "recruitment expert". A director of football in everything but name. If he'd just been a head scout then Levy would have had no reason to sack him, the fact that he did was proof of his higher role than you give him credit for.

You bantering me? Since when was "recruitment expert" a job title. LOL

A director of football in everything but name.

He represented the scouting department within a transfer committee that comprised Levy, Poch, Mitchel (and potentially other mystical figures. : P )

Not once was he reported as being part of the actual buying process, contract negotiations etc., or the broader footballing strategy of the club.

Whut?

I'm not even sure that he was sacked...... The way it was portrayed at the time was that it he thought it was a "nigmtare" and that he was frustrated by a lack of clout. He was also reported to have worked a reported 16 month severance period...... Doesn't sound much like a sacking, but by all meansput some more meat on the bone here if there is more?

EDIT:

"Head of recruitment" "Quits"

Which part of that am I meant to be noting? Just reads like a CV........

I ask again; what gems has he unearthed since his time here?

..........What earns him "top DOF" status?
