When we face teams that do this I really think we should just play kulu or lo celso in the middle with Madison
This is what Ange has done against teams sitting deep in their final third.

He's removed the #8 (or the double-pivot) for a winger and dropped Kulusevski to MF -- with Johnson coming on @ RW.

-Maddison-----Kulusevski-
-----------Bissouma----------

Bissouma/Cuti giving the ball away has to stop. Kulu and Johnson have been woeful. Son non existent and Maddison looks lost.

When we have the ball with the CBs we need to play a few longer balls to offer that threat.
I was thinking the same. Romero has had chances to play a long ball when Sarr, Maddison and Son have made runs but he looks them off and passes it short.

Villa have been really poor. They are the home team and have offered next to nothing when the onus should surely be on them to try and take the game to us a bit. Hopefully they'll do that in the second half and leave a bit more space for us to exploit.
Maybe, but they, like every other team at the moment, know that the best way to beat us is to wait for a mistake giving them a counter attack or a set piece. We're not offering any threat with the ball, why would they mix it up?

Interesting game. Villa playing a 532 and tactically set up to try and nullify us. There have been chances to play players behind Villa’s back line, but Johnson, Udogie and even Maddison haven’t seen them or chosen not to play them.

Kulusevski off, Johnson on the right, maybe even swap Sarr for Bentancur who’s more likely to see/make a creative pass.

Pretty much

Just a little but slow in our reactions and output.

Started bright first 15 mins, then same old same old!

Our wingers never attacking, always holding up the play passing sideways or backwards.

Please Ange break this inverted-winger-vodoo that's been cast upon every PL manager!!!

Play left-footed wingers on the left and right-footed wingers on the right, at least try it for once!!!

3 points is a must today, or top 4 will probably be gone!

Get Werner on!

COYS

They're at home and have had 30% possession and zero shots on target...
Its the smart way to play from Vampire, we struggle against a low block and they played mid week - if they get 3 points the fans wont care about the boring setup!
We just need to come out the traps fast again , early goal and keep the pressure on , Think we will win this with a couple of tweaks!

wheres the guy who went up off the couch to eat?
last match we scored 3 when he did it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've lost 2 league games in our last 11.

You'd think the other 9 teams would have done that if it was that easy to beat us.

By playing 3 CBs, Emery has effectively blocked the channels either side of a normal CB pairing that our forward runs would exploit. Pau Torres & the snail Lenglet would be horribly exposed in a two.

With Luiz & McGinn, and the WBs also playing deep, Villa have effectively parked an ugly claret & blue bus at home.

We need some high turnovers or a spark of genius from one of our midfielders to thread a pass.

We're the team trying to play football, so hopefully we'll be rewarded.
