I am really happy with this news. Toby is great player and model professional. He's still got loads to offer on the field and I think he can be a really good influence on the younger defenders in the squad too.

Mourinho is a big factor. He came in and selected Toby, said why dont you do those pings into Dele like you used to in the early Poch years? No one does that better than you. Do what you’re good at. Oh, and no double training session today.

The response has been positive, clearly.

Probably all true.

But equally his father/agent has been all round Europe in the last year or two, and even with a release clause of £25m there went any other clubs offering what his agent thought Toby should be on, hence why he's accepting £150k pw at Spurs - we made a decent offer to him 2 and 3 years ago, and he's realising that now.

Plus he's probably settled in London now with wife and small child so why not accept a decent deal where you feel settled, and getting a contract until 34 means he's got to the end of his playing career.

So because Googley-Eyes is on obscene money, we need to throw ours round?
Don’t think it’s being thrown around, we’d need to spend 50million plus to find an equivalent experienced centre half. 50million is conservative considering the replacement would need to be late twenties if we got someone for that we’d be lucky.

What??

Why do we need an experienced centre half? Toby had lots of experience and Gnabry ran past him because of his speed and movement. Connolley of Brighton did the same and he was 19 and rather under experienced.

Or do we wipe these from our minds now?

So your happy with a new contract for Alderweireld?

Not having that, Gnabry was given a free run by Aurier for at least three of his goals...

Yeah but that was when he was only on £50k a week! You watch him put three times that effort in now?

So blame Aurier for getting beat by speed but not Toby for the same thing.

Fuck this is getting good.

Connolley?

But he didn’t say that he was beaten by speed in itself

It was a bad night at the office
I feel sure that something similar won’t happen again with José

I'm pleased as long as the extension is used as proof to Tanganga that we are not buying another CB because he is the next cab off the rank. It also makes me wonder if we will buy a young player like Fergerson who nominally a left sided CB and not renew Vertonghen. Kind of makes sense we just went with birth certificates and picked the one with less miles.
