I sincerely hope so. I think Southgate fucking ruined him by playing him in midfield. Gave him ideas about himself.
Poch started it.

I knew that he isn't blessed with pace, but what bothered me is how extremely slow and stiff he looked today.
He's had a massively disrupted season; inevitable he's going to rusty.
Will his best levels return; different debate...? One that probably requires a crystal ball or at least a better vantage point than we have on the sidelines.
Same judgement cal required after Rose & Vic had long lay offs... You roll the dice and find out in due course. i.e. Seemingly Vic was the wrong call; arguably Rose was the right....
For me Eric Dier has fallen right down the pecking order in the past couple of seasons rightly or wrongly i think he is hugely underrated and would lead from the front if he was handed with more responsibility in the side being made captain and playing alongside the rejuvenated sissoko would have teams on the back foot once tried and tested partnership.
Dier has excelled for Spurs in DM and looked assured in possession he is also a dead ball specialist and as all England fans know a sure thing from the penalty spot (except vs Chelsea scum).
On a wider note Poch has a reputation for developing young players but in a season when we have zero signings and a lot of injuries why have we not seen any of our homegrown players ? KWP and Skipp have been marginalised . Since Poch took over only Winks has been brought through as a regular starter. . Kane was already first choice under Sherwood. Why have we not produced any young homegrown players in 5 years ?
For the exact same reason that no top sporting team can play more than one or perhaps two unproven youngsters and hope to compete ... when you can buy a 'world class' experienced professional to fill a need then you would be failing in your duty as a manager if you risked an unproven youngster ... that's just the dynamics of any competitive sport. You let the 'feeder' teams develop players and you cream off the best. The NFL is the perfect example, let the universities develop 5,000 players then pick off the best 500
Just look how many 'homegrown' players are at City, Dippers, Barca, Bayern, PSG etc. they are as rare as hen's teeth and getting rarer.
You will see more and more 18/19/20/21 year old players going out to other European leagues with buyback options in their contracts, gives them an opportunity to play first team football and earn more money, whilst maintaining the 'big' clubs possible future interest. We should be looking to 'option' the best youngsters from other leagues as well ...
The days of 5/6/7 players coming through the youth, into the under 23's, then into the 1st eleven are probably behind us ... just to much money in football for sentiment.
Yes, he did, but he was left with few alternatives after a disappointing transfer window. Southgate had more options available to him.Pretty sure Poch played him DM first.

Are you having a pop at Poch?Hard not to assume he wasnt just adopting what he'd seen work for us
Are you having a pop at Poch?
Are you blaming Poch for the way Dier's career has gone?Huh?
He's still going to turn like an aircraft carrier.I still believe he could be a quality centre back though....

Well I have always thought he was a poor midfielder. Being called up for England seems to give some players mighty notions about themselves. Then he didn't want to play at CB anymore and had a bit of a sulk when he lost his place to Wanyama.No. I don't particularly share the belief that playing him at DM wrecked him. Maybe chopping between positions has brought about a 'master of none' scenario, but seen enough decent shifts from him at DM to prevent me reaching aforementioned conclusion.
Worth remembering different parties seem to think he's a better CM than CB. Seems opinions are 'torn' all over the place re: ED.
He is not a fucking midfield, Poch need to stop playing him there.
