IMO Southgate is on his way to getting it right. Don't forget we were without a true attacking midfield with the likes of Winks, Ox and Lallana and even Shelvey. So once we have that area sorted I think we'll only get better

Now the dust has settled a bit we were lucky in the sense of no expectations no media witch hunts and an easy run to the semis, we have made steps in the right direction but a tough group in the Euros high expectations and a pre tournament media frenzy could easily see us flop , was similar after euro 2004

I think that's also key to this summers euphoria.

We had zero hopes going in. We rallied behind the team due to their youth, due to the medias agenda against Sterling etc. and we got off to a great start against Tunisia.

If we blitz the qualifying, like we always do, the expectations are going to be much higher now just based off the fact we had a great World Cup. All it takes is a slip up against someone for the media to come crashing back down on this team.

It's just how this country works.

Kane is a number 10 though, he's played that role before to great effect. In fact it was debated for two seasons what actually is his best role, a CF or 10. I feel that most would agree he's a mixture of both, likened to a Sheringham rather than a Shearer.

he's unique in football. He's an all-round forward capable of holding the ball up with his back to gaol, bringing in others but give him a yard and he will turn and take it. He plays beyond the width of the penalty box and drops very deep too. So he's a classic number 9, false 9, 10, false 10 (if that's actually a thing now) and even then plays deeper and wider than most in these positions. There really isn't a more versatile 'forward' in the game right now.

Not sure your point here unless you genuinely believe Sterling ahead of Kane should be our go-to moving fwd.

Re: Kane's versatility/hybrid abilities... All noted yet whilst as a ST that drops deep, as an authadox #10 he drops even deeper still... Too deep to be the threat that he poses as being one of the best finishers in the world.

So ultimately, for you:

More of the same or time for a change?

I think with this group of players and manager the media won't be out for blood so I think it'll remain the same in the sense of how the country actually backed the team

In hindsight, it's a real shame Winks and Lallana were both unfit.

But that's football.

Hopefully both can get back to full fitness, stake a claim in qualifying and we can try and work out what's best for 2 years time. We need to ultimately get the best out of Kane and not use Kane to get the best out of others.

Not saying there were any 'dark forces' at work last night... but did anyone see Mandzukic's eyes/stare in the tunnel pre-match last night?
He looked insane!
...either that or he was stoned off his box!

Can't find any pictures to back it up mind!

My point is Kane is the more versatile player because of this he filled the void of not having classic 10 in the squad (Lallana would have played that role had he been fit), also in midfield we lacked a creative player in a double pivot, the player next to the DM, a player who dictates play from a deeper position (Winks/Dembele also Eriksen does this to great effect for us).

England were without these two type of players and Kane was seen as the best compromise to this (laid bare in yesterday's game) and in the other games he shared this role with Sterling with both of them alternating during a game, both however with slight differences around their strengths and weakness in terms of running/sprinting, but for simplicity sake in previous games in the tournament they took turns to drop into the hole while one went more advanced.

The issue wasn't up top, it was in midfield. This was what we were missing and in the absence of a player to fill these spaces we used mainly Kane but Sterling too.
