I know we aren't blessed with great set piece takers.....and that Eriksen has been left out or injured over the last few games.......

but surely we have someone better at them than Kyle Naughton?

Why don't we just take short corners and try to work a chance or failing that just shoot as soon as possible? All we do at the moment is get our entire defence to charge up the pitch, fail to clear the first man and set up a counter attack for the opposition.

Naughton did alright last game. Hit 4 straight good ones, as someone said in the game thread it felt like a club record.

Eriksen's direct free kicks are good but he struggles with corners.

Corners (defending and attacking) have been the Achilles heel for about 3 or 4 years now. I seriously despair every time we get one. Not just poor delivery but seems we don't have anyone good in the air.

I can't believe I am going to say this but If I am judging strictly from the last game, Naughton looked to be a vast improvement over Kyle Walker on corner kicks.

Didn't Rafa take them when he was here? Corners I mean. Not sure about free kicks, probably was Bale back then as well.

And even then with Rafa taking them, I can't remember us ever scoring hardly any, maybe none at all, from his corners.

We last scored form a corner when Jesus roamed this earth. Moses got the assist.

Chicago Spurs (and now New York Spurs too) play set piece roulette. It's fucking brilliant. Basically - everyone takes a turn and if we score from a set piece and it's your turn- you buy a round. Losing never felt so good!

I should add- I know this doesn't fix our set pieces, but it makes me feel better.

Siggy is decent at set pieces.

The thing that worries me though, is set pieces are all about tekkers. When you have Naughton stepping up, you are admitting that he is the most technically sound player on the pitch.

Is about how you want to deliver (in/out swinging) as well. Rather have Naughton taking them than Chadli for example, who can be a threat in the box.

haha, our defence has looked shaky tbh, that stat surprised me.

We need to see the stat where how many we concede within 30 seconds of a set piece or corner, I think a lot of the time yes we make the first ball but sometimes ends in a scramble and a weak clearance. The second and third ball just as important

I too thought Naughtons corners were an improvement, it seems to be just because you can take a free kick doesn't mean you can take a corner to be honest VDV Eriksen Walker will be practicing free kicks in training let other players like Rose and Naughton practice corners so they become specialists, as based on recent years they are clearly different skills

How were we supposed to get anything from set pieces in recent history when we have Lennon, Townsend, Rose, Defoe, Holtby, Modric and co making us look like the girls under 12's team?

We need power. Speaking of which, wasn't Capoue the last person to score from a corner for us with a powerful shot through bodies? Imagine Lennon or Townsend scuffing that and you see the problem.

I have a feeling Naughton taking them is something Tim Tim used to do when Naughton was not playing in the first team. When we signed Eriksen, their national coach said we could have just signed the best free kick/corner kick player in the world. But that is not our problem...You could have golden balls taking them, and with our tiny dancers we would still not have a chance.

There is also a problem at the other end of the spectrum: Daws is great in the air defending corners (blasts them into the stratosphere) but I don't know why he attacks them. He does the same thing, clears the ball every time. Caulker was a big loss in that respect. AVB is a muppet for letting him go.
