Will always thank Sugar for getting us out of the financial mess that we had been left with by Scholar/Venables. Problem was he is a business man and tried to run the club as such. He was never as blatant as the Porno Bros and Baroness (they're cut from the same baragh boy cloth though). A lot of fans give Levy/ENIC a lot of stick but they have at least run us a competent business model, whilst trying to invest in the playing squad, they've certainly done an amazing job with the training centre and soon to be new stadium, it's taken over 15 years to get here though.

yeah fair do's he oversaw the transformation of White Hart Lane to an all seater stadium and re-built two stands and did invest in the playing squad.

Problem was he was not a football man and relied on the advice of others that led to him picking crap managers who in turn bought crap players. Plus he was a media rent-a-gob, which often came back to bite us.

Completely agree with this sentiment to Sugar's time, he just wasn't a football fan. Selling us up to ENIC was the best thing he could do. ENIC through all their faults were at least trying to invest in football clubs and increase their worth. They already had shares in Rangers, Slavia Prague, AEK Athens, Vicenza and Basel. I think they had to sell up when they took control of us.

Sweeping statement, but whenever I watched us play them at Upton Park 'thugs' and 'scum' described a large proportion of their fans quite aptly.

The issue as I see it is that as soon as Brady started trying to weed out trouble makers where does she stop, as there's an awful lot of their fans that slip into a grey area between being full on hooligans and fanatical supporters.

They do have a lot of idiots but we have a few ourselves. What Brady did was either stupidly or cunningly depending on her motive was move people from Upton Park and disperse them all over the place in the OS. Loud standing singing fans put with older fan or tourists etc. One group wanted to sit the other to stand leading to all manner of arguments and people being booted out for standing. The grey area as you rightly call it was made more blurry as passionate fans where holliganised fighting for their right to stand and sing before being booted but they are the guys who can make an atmosphere and certain give banter back to the opposition. A few years time West Ham will be just a really shit Woolwich.

For me a good football stadium should be the opposite of the Emirates and in particular the OS by having a steep gradient, this ensure compactness, good view and that when some one stands they don't totally block your view.

Nah man, shallow gradient is where it's at. Get everyone nice and loose. If everyone needs binoculars then we can sell them at a kiosk and make an extra few pounds. Make everyone sit down and shut the fuck up. A football game should be a day-out with the family sort of affair. We'll print the songs on a sheet of paper to make it easy to sing-a-long for the kids, and sell popcorn to them as well.

Gotta have a running track, too. Absolutely key, for one day out of the year. We'll erect some shabby scaffolding and call it retractable seating, and surround the stadium with a world-class wrap that we'll source from the lowest bidder.

Fuck the transport links, too. Not our problem. Let the city pay or it, just like it paid for everything else. We'll spend no more than a dime.

Agree Sugar was a business man, but ENIC are also a business and also run the club as a business, they just had/have a different business model from Sugar...one which involves more investment, and has as such been better for us on the pitch. It's been more successful from their perspective too...the value of the club has gone up a lot more in that time than under Sugar.

Sugar re-negotiated the terms of our (20M) loan with Midland Bank.....with help from the PLC.

Spurs would never have gone bust for that sum, and Sugar did'nt "save us". He basically bought shares and made a profit.

Sugar was a cunt back then and he is a cunt now. Used this club to get a media profile which he still enjoys to this day. Having him as our Chairman was worse than embarrassing, it was humiliating. Can't stand the bloke.

Could never forgive him for making the man I despised most in Football, being ex Manager of the scum as Manager of Tottenham. The one thing I would never forgive Levy is if he made Wenger Manager.

He is England's version of the Trump!:eriksenlol:

Yeh but the OS is not like any other stadium, it's truly insane, the back rows views are so and you would be better watching in a pub. You only have to see how Wembley compares to WHL then magnify the effect 10X.

I have a West Ham mate (most of my friends growing up are West Ham) who says if you ain't in the front row forget it. Even then if you stand up (and generally singing and standing go together) you get told to sit down, you refuse enough and you get kicked out and banned. He has stopped going and he has been a regular for years.

Far as he is concerned West Ham no longer exists, I asked him about the 5-1 against Woolwich, his response was West Ham didn't lose against Woolwich because they no longer exist, he refers to West Ham as the 'Brady club', 'London Irons' or 'Stratford United'. He is hoping Brady gets on with renaming the club totally so West Ham can do a Wimbledon and reform.

I don't blame him. imagine if Levy moved us into an athletics track with views from the next borough and left Tottenham, changed the name and the badge, got rid of regular fans not just 'thugs', provided the worst facilities and day experience imaginable in an area (Stratford and Hackney Wick) that didn't want them there, stuck cheap tarpaulin around the ground, got violent bouncers to sit in the crowd, talked publically about changing the culture of the club and many other things besides.

They treat their fans like scum, the stadium is totally unsuitable for football on every level, they do everything to alienate their core support. Under these circumstances you will not get an atmosphere of anything other than hate. They may as well play in a sewer, it's a total embrassment.

Have to disagree Sean, as Sammy said, he renegotiated the loan with Midland Bank, which any new owner would have done.
Fair enough, its all about opinions :)
Just to make it clear,i wasn't a fan.I found him arrogant and treated us fans with contempt(remember the whingers remark?).Its just after scholar ,we did seem more financially settled. But maybe any owner could have done that.

He did the easy bit for someone with a lot of dosh. Most if not all football decisions he took were atrocious.

Firing Venables when he did was crazy. Playing really good football, and a really strong 2nd half of 92-93 season, I was really positive about the next league campaign. Within 2 years we were fighting relegation with Gross in charge, one of the lowest points as a supporter since 1967. So bad that even the Man in the Raincoat was an improvement.

A good owner/chairman sorts out the finances and appoints the best manager he can. Sugar could hardly fail on the first count, what with the PL and the dosh flooding into th game. But Christ what a mess he made on the 2nd.

Considering our potential at the time we totally under-achieved while Sugar was chairman and it instilled a mentality of failure that still hangs around to this day. It was a crucial time when the clubs that were to become the big massive teams of the Premier League were establishing their rep and we were too busy totally capitulating and missed the boat. It's quite a surprise we never got relegated and have managed to recover in the way we have, really.

Millions were starting to come into the Premier League and football was popular again having ridden the Italia 90 wave. We really could have been up there if we had someone in charge who appointed good managers.
