He's said several times that he feels that he's much better on the right and every good performance he's had for England, except for the cameo yesterday, has come playing on the right.

I'm not opposed to trying him on the left, but who plays on the left then? Lamela and Townsend both starting? Not a very good idea in my opinion.

He was, but from the little I saw of the game, did he not look more dangerous and cause more problems attacking down the left hand side. ?
Just like when the very little periods he plays on the left for us, he looks more dangerous, and we look more balanced as a team. But for whatever reason potch wants him on the right.

He had his best England games on the right tbh. But I do like him on the left too particularly when we need balls in the box. I think it's one of those things where if it's not working on one wing he should be switched to the other.

I agree, I don't see anything wrong with changing sides, giving the full backs something to think about. But when it's clearly not working, potch just doesn't change it. I believe a should mainly on the left.
But crossing the ball isn't fashionable any more is it I suppose.

The man with the Colombian flu speaks again..

"I think he should concentrate on playing football, to be honest, and don't worry about me," he wrote.
"I'd also say win some medals first before you call it on.
"I have got no vendetta against him, but I am not going to sit here and say he is top drawer."

The 47-year-old insisted his comments had nothing to do with club rivalries.
"He plays for England and I hope he does well," Merson added. "Don't think I sat there the other night and was upset for him when he scored. I was well pleased.
"But he's just got back at Tottenham for the last seven or eight games. Where has he been all season?
"And you can't say I am anti-Tottenham. There is no bigger fan of Harry Kane than me. I think he is unbelievable. You can't throw that Woolwich-Tottenham thing at me."

Unreal.

He is only 47? And already got the Walrus look.

I could not give a shit what him, Charlie Nicholas, Alan Smith or Jamie Redknapp think about our players, our club, our playing style, our manager, our support, our new stadium and anything to do with us. Its our club not theirs, they know nothing about our club. their opinion is about as valid as a piece of dog shit floating down the Nile.......

Is there a proper source for this information outside of dodgy german tabloids? Not sure where we would go without what he brings to the club as a player and person
Only if you consider the BBC a dodgy tabloid. Obviously no one can know for certain but the circumstances of him leaving after Poch arrived, combined with structure of his loan deal, the pursuit of Schneiderlin, the signing of Stambouli, etc. says a lot. I realize he's likeable, but not sure where we would go without him? Have a look around.

I'm afraid to say this but I side with Merson on this. Townsend isn't international quality but England have a massive dearth of wide players, and Townsend can be utilised across the pitch but let's not get carried away by his goal, instead lets consider his role for us; he hasn't been good enough.

This is also quite pathetic

"As soon as the squad was announced two weeks ago, it has been going over in my head. He said it when the squad was announced - that I should be nowhere near the squad.

"As soon as the goal went in, I was just desperate to get that tweet out!

"It didn't really annoy me. It had kind of just given me the extra incentive to silence a few critics and hopefully I have done that as I always have done."

Surely scoring in Italy should not illicit such a response. Merson is comedy gold, and I seldom think he says anything that a drunk baboon couldn't but on this occasion I think he is right.

Its going to get embarrassing and will probably culminate in the two of them doing a crossbar challenge for comic relief or some shit.

As happy as I am for Townsend, Merson is right as far as Im concerned.

My fear is that now he has license to take another 200 shots when there are better options for the pass.

Why not look at the goal as giving him more confidence and improving his composure in front of goal instead of thinking he's going to waste many opportunities? He's heavily cut down on shooting but it seems Spurs fans won't be happy till he's fully neutered bit like AVB did Dembele. Too much negativity.

Merson is right in that the squad quality isn't all that, but to single out Townsend when there are other shit players who have done fuck all this season is ridiculous. *cough* Walcott. At least Townsend has produced for England when given the chance.

Agree that the urge to tweet after scoring was lame as hell. Needs to learn from Bale how to respond to critics- you don't.

Andros Townsend wants talks with Tottenham over his future

England winger is seeking discussions with Spurs this summer following interest from Serie A and a Premier League rival

England’s Turin hero Andros Townsend will seek reassurances over his Tottenham Hotspur future at the end of the season.

Townsend scored England’s equaliser against Italy on Tuesday night andTelegraph Sport can reveal at least one Serie A club are interested in signing the winger.

There is also interest from the Premier League in Townsend, who wants to be clear on where he stands at White Hart Lane before looking at his options.

Having become a regular member of manager Roy Hodgson’s England squad, Townsend is eager to be sure of playing first-team football in the run up to next summer’s Euro 2016 finals in France.

Townsend planned Merson rebuke 'for weeks'

The timing of Townsend’s goal in Turin could not have been better, as an Italian top-flight club have shown an interest in him over the past month and had scouts in the Juventus Stadium stands.

His goal against Italy has put Townsend ahead of Theo Walcott in Hodgson’s plans and the England manager has reaffirmed his belief in the player.
Townsend has been in and out of the Spurs team under Pochettino since missing the World Cup through injury.

He has started the last five successive Tottenham games, but is often the first player to be substituted at around the 60-minute mark.

Pochettino is expected to sign Jay Rodriguez from former club Southampton this summer, which will increase competition in the forward positions at Spurs.

There also remains an issue surrounding £30million record signing Erik Lamela, who was preferred to Townsend during the first half of the season.
Townsend signed a four-year contract with Spurs in October 2013, having scored on his England debut against Montenegro.

There was interest in the 23-year-old from Southampton last summer and the St Mary’s club could look at Townsend again.

Townsend was sent out on loan to nine different clubs before making his breakthrough at Tottenham, where he has made 83 appearances, scoring 12 goals.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has told the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust that the club will look to recruit young players around the £10m-£15m price range this summer.

Rodriguez fits into that philosophy, which underlines the acceptance inside White Hart Lane that signings such as Lamela and striker Roberto Soldado have not worked out for the club.

Levy promised that he will ring fence a percentage of available cash for transfers while Spurs build their new £400m stadium. The club also see holding on to star players such as Harry Kane and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as a priority.

Having reached an agreement with Archway Steel to purchase the remaining land for the new stadium, Tottenham can now press ahead with the project and work towards securing financing and naming rights.

Spurs are planning for the fact they will have to move out of White Hart Lane and ground share for the 2017-18 season ahead of the new stadium opening in August 2018.

Wembley, the Olympic Stadium, Upton Park and Stadium MK were all under consideration as temporary homes, but THST were told that list has currently been cut down to just Wembley and Stadium MK.
