The boy is 19 and has never played in Europe, why is anyone surprised at what Ange has said?

He will play for the first team when he’s ready, given his age and background that may be a few months away. Or it may not. We’ll just have to see.

tbh Argentina is a fucking hotbed of talented young footballers. We should always be looking at deals like this, it’s just a question of identifying the right talent and then trying to develop it. We haven’t historically got that part right.

For what feels like forever it's seemed to be the case the English teams were reluctant to buy direct from South America and preferred to see how they fared in Netherlands, Portugal, Italy and (randomly) Shaktar; whilst knowing that the wonder-kids were all automatically pencilled in for Barca & RM anyway.

If Alejo hits it out of the park in training he's going to get fast tracked into getting minutes. Ange makes a good point that how quickly he adapts to life in England will be on a individual basis.

Us having two Argentines (and a score of other South Americans) on our books already should definitely help.

Chicken and egg situation, the reason why Barca and RM got a free run when it comes to talent in Brazil and Argentina is because of PL clubs being risk averse.
That seems to have changed now though with the likes of ManCity having a strong network in south America

More from Ange:

"It will be a while for him, I think. We've just got to let him settle, he's come halfway around the world," said the Spurs head coach. "He's a young guy, it's a fairly different level. He's one we'll invest in in the long-term but I wouldn't expect him to see any minutes in the first part of the season."
This is a good thing, Ange is protecting him here and setting expectations right off the bat.

Refreshing.

According to the guys in Argentina, he is a very talented player for the future. I think he will get minutes if we are winning at home.

Brighton signed Facundo Buonanotte from Rosario Central, the same club Veliz played for, in the January 2023 window.

Buonanotte is a year younger, and played 13 times for Brighton last season, scoring once (a/c to wiki).

Two observations.

Brighton's model is based on giving young players first team action almost immediately, trusting their recruitment network, & speeding up their development.

Secondly, it's probably easier to ease an attacking midfielder who can play wide & central into a team than a CF who has to be able to score goals on a regular basis almost immediately.

I'm content for Ange & our coaches to help Veliz adapt in training,. Brighton's fans probably have a lot more patience than ours, and we need to give Veliz the best possible chance to be effective in our tactical setup.

Maybe we should give him a chance. Richarlison isn't really pulling up any trees, so what harm could it do to try him for a bit.

should start against fulham if hes fit.
Ange has watched Scarlett & Veliz in training, and last he commented Scarlett was closer to first team minutes than Veliz.

Which is largely understandable. Scarlett has been learning Ange's system since pre-season began and is a very good finisher. Veliz is adapting to a new culture and a new league.

I have high hopes for Veliz, but if our head coach thinks Scarlett is closer right now, that's good enough for me.
