East Stand all but gone!

Last game at The Lane aside, I've been reasonably unemotional with the demolition of the stadium (my romance with it went when the shelf was ripped out, all the other stands were reasonably new) but can't deny feeling sentimental seeing this stand come down. My first game was watched in that stand some 45'ish years ago, fittingly my last game was here too.

A level crossing in Tottenham will be closed next month as part of plans to double its platforms and extra tracks to the railway in the area.

Network Rail is currently upgrading the two-track railway to allow for more trains per hour, in anticipation for the Meridian Water housing development which is taking place nearby.

The Meridan Water development will see a former industrial site turned into 10,000 new homes over the next 20 years, and at the moment, the railway can’t cope with the expected demand.

The Stratford to Angel Road (STAR) rail upgrade project will see a third railway track added. Passive provision for a fourth track will be included for Crossrail 2.

At Northumberland Park, the existing old two-platform station is to be swept away with a the third railway track running right through the middle of the existing ticket office. So that is to go, and be replaced with something newer.

In preparation, they are also getting rid of the existing level crossing as there were concerns that with more trains, the crossing would be closed for a considerable period of time. So better to just get rid of it.

The current northbound platform will also get tracks on its other side, and there will be passive provision for 12-car trains should it be needed in the future, and a new fourth platform.

The level crossing closes to road traffic on 1st July, and an old 1960s era footbridge is to be demolished and replaced with a modern version that’s accessible to those who struggle with stairs.

Staff will be at Northumberland Park level crossing to answer questions and provide information on the following dates and times:

  • Monday 19th June, 7.30 – 9.30am
  • Monday 19th June, 4.30 – 7.00pm
  • Friday 23rd June, 7.30 – 9.30am
  • Friday 23rd June, 4.30 – 7.00pm
  • Monday 26th June, 7.30 – 9.30am
  • Friday 30th June, 7.30 – 9.30am
  • Friday 30th June, 4.30 – 7.00pm
Further up the tracks, Angel Road station is being demolished entirely, and a new station will be built a hundred yards of so away.

Looks like there preparing to lift the Paxton truss this evening.
It kind of needs to go. Progress on the new stadium seems painfully slow. (The Jumbotron's gone by the way).
I heard from someone that the contractors wanted to use explosives in the demolition work but I guess that was deemed to be too unsafe.

its not quite as simple as a metal sheet and the system is in use elsewhere and has been found safe. If done correctly a sliding pitch bears no significant difference to a rooted one.
