I don't really have a problem with how we're set up defensively in open play, every set up has weaknesses and sometimes our CB's get exposed, but the opposition still needs the quality to make that happen.

As for set pieces, our biggest problem is a lack of players who can head the ball. We only have Romero and Richarlison and the latter wasn't even on the field during those two goals.

Before today, we conceded 12 goals from set pieces which was 2 behind Villa, our main competition this season. Most teams have conceded around 10 this season.

Get players who are good in the air and it won't be as much of a problem. It really is that simple.

Dragusin was bought with this in mind.

Aerial duels percentiles (fbref):

Dragusin 88
Romero 82
Udogie 48
VDV 20
Porro 10

But Drag doesn't look to have the all round game to displace VDV or Porro. So really we need VDV to improve and get up to something like 50th centile. And given his height, that should be possible.

3 at the back is something we should be looking at right now. It doesn't leave you so exposed at the back with the full backs pushing up. Plus having somebody big and good defensively in the air would no doubt help rectify our set piece situation.

strangely enough this squad would actually be ideal for the wingback system now. youd just want it to be someone like hoddle rather than conte.

wed concede far less.

----------------------vic-------------------------
---------romero---drag-----VDV----------------
porro-------------biss----------------------dog
--------sarr---madders----bentancur------
-----------------richy----------------------------
lots of options to change and mix about that front 4. maybe biss and bentancur swap sometimes too. far better at defending corners with that side. romero, drag, VDV, richy all should help plus you have height in dog, sarr and bentancur.

Jesus, you would be asking a lot from our 2 forward players in this system. Migh concede less but probably wont score either.

Hard to tell where the buck stops with Ange's influence vs first-team coach agency, but it's pretty clear whatever Mile's doing is not good enough.

Very limited coaching experience and he's tasked with the defensive setup of a large Premier League club. At least Mason had a few solid years under his belt, although i'm hardly convinced by him either at the moment.
