RIP absolute legend of the game. Played with a dislocated shoulder in 1970 WC semifinal.

"Der Kaiser" (the emperor) is one of the best - and most elegant - CBs the world has seen. He "reinvented" the CB position as a "libero" - and continued to have a strong impact after his playing career as head-coach and director. One of the best ever "footballing brains".
He's truly a football legend.

German football legend Franz Beckenbauer has died at the age of 78.
The World Cup winner died on Sunday, his family have confirmed, as tributes from the world of football flooded in.
Beckenbauer's health has gradually declined ever since he son Stephan died in 2015.

RIP. A true legend. My father (a Bayern fan) has said that every single defender that he's watched couldn't hold a candle to Beckenbauer, apart from Nesta. That's how highly he rated him.

The first two men to win the World Cup as player then manager have passed in the last 2 days. I wish Didier Deschamps well.

I think almost anyone of a certain age who compiled an all-time XI would have had Beckenbauer in it, in the role which he effectively made his own. Hugely influential in football.
