Tottenham star Danny Rose adamant he knows his value and will ensure he ‘gets what I’m worth’
The most brutally honest interview that you will read all year... the 27-year-old Spurs and England left-back speaks exclusively to SunSport

AFTER six months of intense frustration at being laid low by a knee injury, and a decade of keeping his head down as a dedicated pro, Danny Rose wants to give you a piece of his mind.

He may be England’s first-choice left-back and a member of the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the past two seasons, but Rose has often felt under-valued and misunderstood.

He has requested this interview to put that all straight.

Rose said: “I am opinionated and I might not have long left in football.

“One thing is for sure, for the rest of this career, I will play this game how I want to play it and, while I am not going to disrespect anyone, I am going to voice my opinions.”

Rose is not demanding a transfer from Tottenham.

But in a candid and wide-ranging interview, he gives a refreshingly honest opinion on a club which has punched above its weight with two title challenges, yet has not spent a penny on players this summer.

The rampaging full-back is adamant that he is motivated more by trophies and medals than money.

But he insists he does not believe he or his Spurs team-mates are paid their true worth.

Having recently turned 27, and contemplating a return from the longest injury lay-off of his career, Rose admitted: “At my age, and having missed six months with injury, I have been thinking about this quite a lot.

“I am reaching my peak and have probably only got one big contract left in me.

“Time is running out and I do want to win trophies. I don’t want to play football for 15 years and not have one trophy or one medal.

“Sorry, that’s not what I am about. I wouldn’t be happy with that. I want to win something.

“I will say this too — I will play up north. I don’t know exactly when, but I will get back up north and play some football somewhere.

“I moved away from home (from Leeds to Spurs) at 16.

“Yes I’ve got team-mates who have moved away from families in South Korea and Argentina, but I have been away for over ten years now and I don’t get to see my mum that often.

“I am going to make it my priority before I retire to play football up there.

“My short-term focus is to get back to playing like last year and if I do that the long-term will take care of itself.

“I’m not saying I want out, but if something came to me that was concrete, I’d have no qualms about voicing my opinions to anyone at the club.”

Rose is believed to earn £65,000-per-week. A move to Chelsea or either Manchesterclub could earn him two or three times as much.

When told he might be accused of being motivated by cash, Rose is uncommonly honest in insisting he knows his worth – and will not sell himself short.

He said: “Being injured has harmed me on and off the field in a lot of ways.

“When you’re injured you get a lot of time to think and I’ve had a lot of ‘what if?’ moments. It’s been hard to deal with.

“One thing is for sure — I know my worth and I will make sure I get what I am worth.

“I am not playing as well as I have done not to get paid what I think I am worth.

“In any walk of life, if you think you are worth a certain amount, why settle for less? I am not that person.

“If I get to levels I reached last season — and this goes out to everybody — I will make sure I get what I am worth. I don’t know how much longer I might have at this level. I’m not going to be stupid enough not to try and get the most out of it — medals, trophies and salary.

“Anyone who thinks this is primarily for money, that is not the case. But I know what I am worth.

“As with everyone else in my team, in my opinion, I am worth more than I am getting.

“I am not speaking on behalf of other players, but that is my view.”

Rose has huge respect for manager Mauricio Pochettino — he has even been referred to as the “gaffer’s son” by team-mates who joke he is a teacher’s pet.

Yet the long-serving left-back is sick of hearing suggestions he was not up to it before Pochettino arrived in 2014.

Back then Rose was unpopular with Spurs fans after tough times under Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood.

And when Pochettino handed him a new contract, many were scathing.

Rose added: “People speak about me and to me as if I had two left feet before Mauricio came to the club.

“But I want people to understand that having one average season, as I’d had, doesn’t make you a bad player. You need to distinguish that.

“I don’t usually blow my own trumpet, but I was a good player before the manager came. I am an even better one now and he has helped me become more consistent.

“But don’t ever speak about me as if I had two left feet before he arrived. I am not having that. I’ll never forget how some fans treated me when I signed a contract.

“I have been desperate to get that on record and I hope people read about my mindset on that one.

“I am happy at Tottenham, I love my team-mates and the fans have been great for the last three years.

“But I got a lot of stick before Mauricio came to the club. I’ll never forget some of the things they were saying about me.

“Now I want to win things and I want to be in the starting 11 at the World Cup with England. If I have a good season, these things will sort themselves out.”

Ok, extremely bad timing. Not so bad content. He can stay.

Not surprised by this at all. Rose already hinted at all this months ago when he talked about Walker to the BBC.

At the end of the day when we have a wage structure like ours this is going to happen from time to time. We, as fans, need to accept that. Until the new stadium arrives and we are have greater financial power nothing with change - and the usual cretins screaming about world class signings and wages can whine all the want, but we know that the club isn't going to alter it's wage structure or bring in a mega signing just to placate little Danny. In fact, those who thing we can bring in "world class" players and pay them mega bucks, while paying our existing players mega bucks, ought to seriously think about supporting a different club.

And do you know what? To some degree Rose can do one. Unfortunately it seems he's just another lazy footballer who'd rather just move to a club where there is less effort for trophies and more money. He moans that he isn't winning medals, but he's just spent the best part of the fucking past year sidelined while the club pays for his treatment and while the other players came very close to winning the title without him. You'd think he'd have the sense to shut up, return play out of his skin and then moan after reminding everyone he still has the goods. But right now he comes across as full of himself, and, frankly, a bit ungrateful considering what the club has done for him. I almost feel like he should just fuck off if that's what he wants.
Sorry Salmon, are you serious?!
I hate to see what's happening, it's all sad. You can't say it's little Danny, you already forgot Walker?! I think the club made two big mistakes this summer, first not to replace walker and second up to date the only PL club who hasn't signed a single player. You can't blame him for being on the sidelines because of injury, he is been giving it all when he is playing. I remember him scoring against Liverpool, first home game last season, I was there, meant so much for him, he is genuine guy but his head has been turned for money or whatever else probably by his best friend Walker.

I wouldn't give two fucking shits if we signed no one and sold Rose to be honest.

Football is killing me slowly these days, from the transfer trophy, to the fans, the fan tv, to twitter, to Neymar to forums.

The only thing I love is this club.

Bring on the football and fuck the rest as far as I'm concerned.

See ya boys
In that case (no incomings), I'd say we've been let down by the powers that be.

Worst thing is, this whole Rose fiasco is the worst of all worlds because I see him doing it out of horrible (or no) advice from his agents, with skewed quotes in a shit rag of a newspaper, and (probably) no way back from Poch despite not even saying anything that terrible.

Suddenly we go from having the best full backs in the league to the worst fullback situation in the league.

I get and respect your love for the club, which is why I like reading your posts on here, Sammy. Fucking hell, we all deserve a better window that the clusterfuck we've had up to this point.

You have to ask yourself the effects this could have on players in the pipeline to sign. Barkley for example
Not to mention the unrest and ill feeling it'll create in the dressing room.

There's no way he gives that interview and thinks he can just stroll back into training/rehab without getting a serious bollocking from Poch/Levy.

I can't believe he does this unless he's trying to engineer a move.

Yes, I am completely serious - and the transfer window isn't shut yet so it's false to claim we haven't replaced Walker. If it shuts and there is no replacement then I will also voice my criticism.

Rose plays for a club that he knows cannot pay mega buck and isn't likely to sign a huge cost player. He also owes the club and Poch a lot for the faith they have shown in him, including when injured. The last thing he should be doing is acting the cunt by mouthing off to the press and setting a bad example for the rest of the players - especially days away from the start of the season at a time when he isn't even fit.

Ha ha. So we can't sign players because of the strength of our first team, and we can't keep players because we can't sign anyone.

We're properly fucked.

We should have got players in soon enough that rumbles internally never arose. I admire Our philosophy about trying to get the right player but we've really dropped the ball this window. I expected far more than it seems we are able to muster

The article pretty much states his intention to leave next summer if he plays well this year.

He signed a new contract towards the end of 2016 and has been injured since January/February. Now he's moaning about wages!!

Imagine getting a pay rise at Christmas, taking 6 months off and then moaning about being underpaid. The cheek of it!

"As with everyone else in my team, in my opinion, I am worth more than I am getting."

Won't be long till the others start to realise this if they haven't already.

Well, this summer window has been a fucking disaster. No matter how you put it. I don't know what the board/Levy are playing at. If signing Sissoko on deadline day for 30 million wasn't enough of an indication that we need to get our shit together and identify and sign our targets early, I don't know what will.

After losing a really good player to a rival and consistently being put down by everyone for our stupid approach of moving late to make signings, the mood is not going to be great at Spurs. Sign someone decent and established and not just 2-3 youngsters.

We have been so close challenging for the title and have an incredible set of players with us. Now is the time you take some risks and invest in the team.
