Agree with Sammy in that I love Toby and all the other players while they are committed to us. Time will tell if Toby is being honest or just pulling the wool over our eyes (and I include Harry in that too). The one person who I would be devastated to lose is Poch - that would be a blow and a half.

This is what is crazy about football ..... ONLY £50,000 A WEEK.

I know that's underpaid compared to the silly money other clubs are paying, but gee whizz, these guys aren't saving lives!

He's only still on that money because he hasn't signed an improved contract with us yet.

Could have been happily earning 80 or 100k since the summer. Done himself out of gazillions, the daft bastard.

if that's the case, then surely he's off some time soon, n'est pas?

Possibly.

I personally think Verts eclipsed him last season and so far this and Sanchez was an inspired signing. No need for us to be held over a barrel - he'll either sign, or not. We're covered for the future. I'd like for him to stay, but this media fed nonsense about wages just shows how much some of our players have started stroking their egos before they've actually delivered much.

The issue is that if they don't get the money then it's just going to line the pockets of guys like Lewis, Abramovich, et. al. At least the players are actually doing something to earn it. Aside from moving to a socialist economic structure entertainers will always make more money than they "deserve" because of the immense monetary value that's produced by their works.

It could be argued that signing Alderweireld meant turning is from top 4 also rans to genuine top 4 team. Since his arrival our defence has certainly tightened up and Vertonghen whilst always great has improved no end having long time partner Toby next to him.

Toby deserves an improved contract, no question about it.

So Toby only on £50k pw? Fuck sake he deserves to be on double that.

Yet other media reported his on £75K pw, which at the time of signing made him one of, if not the highest paid player in the squad, other players have since been awarded new contracts (Kane, Eriksen, Lloris).

Again, why people get their knickers in such a twist over this? Especially Alderweireld's contract is odd, club would appear to know exactly what they are doing this squad is testament to that, I say continue to let them do what they are doing as I haven't seen any recruitment mistakes that have held us back. It's made even stranger when he has 3yrs (yes last year the buyout can be activated, so you could say has 2yrs left) left on his contract. Whilst Vertonghen, who has outperformed Toby for last season and this so far, has only one year left, yet people concerned by Alderweireld's contract!!??! I'd say Toby's agent has a very, very loud mouth on him and is doing a great job ensuring all it's in the public domain.

The thing is Toby brings the best out in him.

And risking him signing for chelsea or united on a free? No way. Sell him abroad when he has only one year left.
The power's in Toby's hands now. For one year left, you can't force him to go. He will end up joining whoever he wants to given each day is contract is getting shorter. Rather use him for another year than make 25 million in the last year, as per his release clause that gets in place for a year's extension.

I have agreed with a few comments here but do not think Alderweireld is on 50k per week.

Undying loyalty is maybe too much to ask from players, including as I think we will find out soon enough from Kane but denying yourself a pay rise for 2/3 years in the hope of tripling your money at a later date is a leap.

Like most players he is one poor tackle or twist from 6 months out and a return to playing at not quite the same level.

High stakes on his part. We sell in July if no contract signed by then and rightly so.
