It kind of annoys me when anyone (even our own, but especially arse and plastic leicester fans) suggests last season we "lost the title" or were "title contenders".

Let's be honest, we just happened to rise above the other teams who lost a load of points. It was a low point season.

It's not like we spent half the season in 2nd - we spent 70% of the season in 4th/5th, and had a consistent run when other teams didn't.

So the reason why we don't look like we were title chasers last season, is because we weren't.

8 points better off than at this stage last season.

9 points better off in the same fixtures as last season.

Burnley next.

We drew at home to them last season so getting a win would see us continue to improve on the same fixtures as last season.

Have we improved. Yes, we are a better team than we were under Santini, Jol and AVB. However, we are worse than we were under Harry, Sherwood, and Sir Bill. If we are comparing with last season, I would say worse, as last year we were pressing a lot more, and the players appeared to be far more interested. The simple fact is that our only chance of winning anything this year is the FA cup, and as the manager shows a total disregard and lack of respect for it, we won't win that either

Its funny that you can go back 5, 10......50 years to claim we are worse, but you cant see past the last 8wks when looking at improvements, and the potential of the club right now.

Its a work in motion, and there will be ups and downs along the way.

Kane out for 7 weeks, Toby for a month, Lamela since before we drew with Leicester....Dier at CB and lost just one game sitting 7pts off top with TWENTY FIVE games left. 75pts left to play for.

Funny how when we were 7pts points behind Leicester with about 5 games left we all believed, right up until Chelsea......yeah yeah, Liverpool and Chelsea are better this year....that doesnt mean we have gone backwards though does it.

If we're doing so poorly, should'nt they by out of sight? We done well through our injuries period, lets see of Liverpool can go 12 unbeaten without Coutinho and Lallana.

Lets see if Chelsea win another 7 on the spin if Costa, Hazard and Luiz gets injured and Kante has to go CB..

So without looking too fancy, we are actually doing better than last season. Won more games. Exact same goal difference. 1 point better off in the league. 1 point gained on last seasons fixtures. When you add into the fact that 4 of our opening 6 games have been away from home, we haven't made any signings, still haven't hit into gear yet, it isn't quite the crisis it's all cracked up to be.

Plus we have a great new stadium to look forward to.

Huddersfield and Cardiff coming up next. Arguably the two worst teams in the league this season. Maximum points from that and we can start looking at the league table and wondering why on earth we were all melting after 2 losses.

Better under Sherwood. :walker:

You fucking whopper.

2 points off top whilst we are in "crisis", "going backwards", "whilst all our rivals have strengthened"

Better under Sherwood.
Your having a fucking laugh, surely.

One of the reasons I don't rate Poch is because he is a reincarnation of AVB, and even the football is boring to watch.

Last season or this?
We have or have had, injuries in key areas namely striker and attacking midfield. Our central midfield from last year has been reshuffled and one of the best DMs in the PL is now at CB.

Do you think those players will never return to the team? Or that we will regain form? Or did you think it was all shit last season too?

So tiring when people think Lamela, Kane and Toby being out, and Dier not in the middle should have no effect on our game.

If that was the case, just sell Kane then right? I mean, if our game should be identical for the 7 weeks he was out and its only the managers fault? Why bother.....another manager will simply come in and get 30 goals from Janssen eh?

It's utter nonsense.

Players like Jan saying stuff like, "This is probably the strongest squad that I've ever played in. I can't imagine playing anywhere else", while people on the internet call us shit..

Tottenham's 4-1 win at Southampton on Wednesday made it three wins in a row to take Mauricio Pochettino's men to within a point of the top four. Adam Bate looks at why the Premier League table obscures the fact that Spurs are still a side on the up...

For the second season in a row, Tottenham are preparing to travel to Watford for their 19th Premier League game of the season. A year ago, there was a real buzz about their exciting young team and a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road took them into third spot in the table.

This time around, they go there with more wins and more points than last season. They have scored more goals and conceded fewer at the other end too. These are the statistics of a side on the up. And yet, Spurs are currently fifth in the Premier League.

Alli double sinks Saints
Dele Alli scored twice in Tottenham's 4-1 win at Southampton

It's an indication of the task Tottenham face in trying to engineer progress under Mauricio Pochettino. While working with a smaller budget than their major rivals, as well as building a stadium in the hope of closing that financial gap, they must keep getting better too.

The problem is that everyone else is attempting the same thing and Spurs do not operate in a vacuum. So when Chelsea win 12 on the spin, it matters. When Liverpool, Manchester City, Woolwich and Manchester United all have more points than a year ago, it stymies their efforts.

Highlights of Tottenham's 4-1 Premier League win over Southampton
As others recover lost momentum, the pressure is on this Tottenham team and affects the way their efforts are perceived, both inside and outside the club. Even modest improvement can spark criticism. Any dip, however brief, becomes a cause for concern.

Harry Kane has not got the headlines this season with some questions over his form, but it was his brilliant header that gave Spurs the lead at Southampton. It was his eighth Premier League goal of the season. Only half a dozen players in the country can better that.

For Kane, read Christian Eriksen, another who has received underwhelming reviews. His corner for Kane's goal was his fifth assist of the campaign. But for Oriol Romeu's deflection that technically denied him an assist for Heung-Min Son's third, he'd be second in the Premier League on that list.

Elsewhere, Dele Alli covered more ground and made more sprints than anyone else at St Mary's in a two-goal display that earned him the man-of-the-match award. The initial fuss over Alli might have died down, but he is on course to better last season's goal tally as well.

Such stories suggest that expectations are rising for Tottenham's talented team. Of course, that was always the way this was going to need to work. Pochettino does not have the resources to bring in ready-made stars of the calibre of the players he has helped to create.

Consider how much it would cost to sign Toby Alderweireld or Mousa Dembele now, let alone Kane or Alli? Instead, Spurs must look to add depth through their acquisitions without being able to promise such signings a starting spot in a fairly settled line-up.

Moussa Sissoko and Victor Wanyama both started against Saints with Vincent Janssen involved from the bench, but they were all bought to supplement rather than star. The contract renewals of the main men might not fuel the fire like transfers, but these are the key to their hopes.

Both Kane and Hugo Lloris have agreed new long-term extensions already this season, deals that will bring continuity. It is encouraging that these have been completed when players could earn significantly more elsewhere. The players themselves see what is happening.

Tottenham's last five seasons after 18 games
Season Played Won Drawn Lost Points
2012/13 18 9 3 6 30
2013/14 18 9 4 5 31
2014/15 18 9 3 6 30
2015/16 18 8 8 2 32
2016/17 18 10 6 2 36

Clearly, they believe they are part of something and in the right place to develop under Pochettino. It reinforces the words of Danny Rose in the summer, surely the club's most improved player, when he explained how the Argentine's coaching was crucial to his form.

"As daft as it sounds, I had never had a manager work on me until Mauricio Pochettino came to Tottenham," said Rose. "It was not until the current manager came that I had anyone who has taken time out to work on me as a left-back and try to help me improve."
Given the team's disappointing Champions League exit and a glance at the Premier League table, it would be easy to ignore these improvements. After all, a side that was targeting the title in the spring now sits outside of the top four after 18 games of the season.

But win at Watford on New Year's Day and Spurs will be on 39 points at the halfway stage and on course for a best ever Premier League points total. That it might not be enough says more about the difficulty of the task ahead of them than it does about the efforts of Pochettino and his players.

- 1 point better off than at this stage last season
- Best start to a season since 1960/1961.

It’s crazy really, considering we haven’t really played well. Even crazier when you consider that we really should have seen out the three points at Watford. Bodes well.

I keep forgetting that at some point this season we will see our team walking out at the new stadium. Hopefully our injury situation won’t be as bad by then. If we can get to that stage whilst still within sight of 1st place this could turn out to be an interesting season.

Okay, just looked at our fixtures for next couple of weeks (in fact, till March and game against Chavs).
11 games, 7 at home, 4 away.
The only team from top 6 we're gonna face in next two months is United. Apart from that, hardest fixture is gonna be at Everton. Other than that, all games we SHOULD win. I know football doesn't work that way, but.. If there is still a small hope, we need to make a run in next two months.

COYS!

Great..best team out v goons in LC then!
