The current system might be speeded up by a month or two - if all clubs co-operate and that's not a given - but its known early on in the season by the clubs which of them might be on dangerous ground and which are in deep do dahs !

So the rules could be changed so that in December when clubs give their accounts to PL the clubs are forced to announce (1) do they think they are well inside ffp rules or (2) do they think they are border line or (3) do they think they will have tough discussions with ffp. Of course many clubs will opt for (2) but such is life.

But that way all fans know half way through the season whether there is a chance of a points deduction or other penalties.
Yeah but at least that way everybody knows who has a points reduction and how many points at the start of the season.

Doing it in season is chaotic. I have real sympathy for any of the clubs down there like Luton in that they don't really know what's going on. They don't know whether Forest will win an appeal. When you are down there the clubs down there are looking at what points they can realistically pick up, what the target safety number is and this must surely be unhelpful to say the least.

What happens if the club being deducted manages to stay up by a point say, but the following season they get deducted 4? Surely the relegated club(s) would have recourse to sue?

It's not perfect, but doing it mid season at least prevents that type of scenario?

Yeah it's bollocks. People cheering on FFP for now but its just there to lock in the big clubs and stop upstarts.

Yet it didn't stop B'muff, Brighton, Brentford and such climbing from the lower leagues to the top ranks.............

- Brighton currently sit 8th and 6th last season and are sat on a massive bundle of cash.
- Villa currently sit 4th having been in the champo but a few years ago.
- Lester had their fairytale & an FA Cup.

........A certain North London club forced a rebranding of the "top 4 clubs" to "the big 6" - sustainably! - whilst building a state of the art stadium in the process.

The only mistake was not regulating The Chavs & City to begin with.

Another potential scenario, Everton stay up by 2 points but only because of the Forest points deduction.

After the season ends Forest get their penalty reduced on appeal. Forest and Everton are now level on points and goal difference. Who stays up?

Murky innit?

No scenario is perfect, but I feel the current one is best for all parties, as it concludes before the season ends. The likes of Luton might not know exactly how it will end up, but their focus should be on amassing as many points as they possibly can to take themselves out of that scenario anyway. It's the only thing they have any control of.

The premier league positions are decided in this order by:

- points
- goal difference
- goals scored
- a one of playoff game

Until the silent Saudi investment stops

Are you really that fucking thick

So until they stop investing they are sustainable. Or unless their revenue grows enough during the period of investment.

That's how it works. Any business that wants to grow usually needs investment outside their means. Does that make them all unsustainable?

Ia there any reason that a guaranteed period of owner investment shouldn't be sustainable?

Yes because nothing is guaranteed. Look at Everton, Chelsea etc - had the sustainable rug pulled due to politics

They only stop spending because of FFP. They are backed by silent Saudi investment, they could spend forever

They were being run at a loss for 20 years; accumulating a 1.6bn debt that nearly blew up in their face and could have quite easily taken them under......... Then they just burned through another 1bn in a year and went backwards. In no sane world is that to be considered sustainable.

(Sure; the roots of their investment co, ownership has question marks attached; but neither you or I know how deep their pockets specifically are.)

As someone else stated above; you don't know what lurks around the corner; you're only sustainable until you're not..... Boehly's crew could pull the plug tomorrow and leave them with a bunch of massive 8 year contracts to choke on whilst they meanwhile face the further prospect of multiple relegations.

It should be a double relegation.

Any punishment that allows Man City to loan out their key players and absorb one year of losses before a triumphant return to the PL is itself a crime.

Send them down to League One and it dismantles their squad and forces them to start over again without benefitting from their past fraud.

They can keep any trophy where Woolwich were runners up though.
