Bodo Glimt was a horror show. Especialy given the fact that they were in their close season.
The home game against Real Madrid was brilliant. For an hour, then it went as expected.
We could and should have won both games against Skaktar but fucked up both of them.

It was good to see Ange stick to his all out attack style of play, but a more pragmatic approach, might have seen us do better in Europe.

However I have no worries about him at Spurs. He has a much better quality of player to call on, and much better quality of opposition on a weekly basis.

Almost every league game will be of a CL/Europa league standard. As opposed to Celtic when the step up from domestic to European football was massive
In some areas, yes. I wouldn’t be so sure in others (CB)

Good honest brief of what you saw.

Nice one

I’m sure he reflects on games like Real etc and analyses whether the approach taken was optimal - I don’t see him as the pig headed, stubborn type like Jose/Conte who never adapts or changes his style and formation

Agree here, and would add that I think what Europe showed across the 2 years was that ultimately the players just weren't good enough.

If you take the 2 matches against Real last season, Celtic created more chances against them (in both matches, home and away) than anyone else, right up until the City game when they got knocked out. That's fairly remarkable, yet despite this, Celtic were on the end of 2 heavy defeats and along with Real's obvious quality showing in the end, it was also largely down to Celtic just not being good or clinical enough to take those chances that were there.

Now that was against Real Madrid, by far the best team we played, but the theme of creating loads of chances but failing to capitalise on them was present throughout the entire UCL campaign. I wouldn't say that Ange was blameless, as we were open at times and conceded some poor goals, however when you consider that Celtic actually created more chances on goal than PSG during the group stage, it's evident that his system put us in a position to take more points than what we did, especially against Shakhtar like you said.

There was some degree of bad luck involved, having hit the post on 4 or 5 occasions, but the reality is that mostly it was just a case of the players not being of the required standard for that level IMO.

I would also say that some players were a bit stage struck, or were trying too hard. I think this affected Kyogo in particular. He just let the occasion get to him, rather than just playing his game.

But that can happen when there's such a massive gulf in class between the CL and the SPL, a problem that I've already said won't happen at Spurs

Thought I would check on his first season at Celtic.

Won the league, the league cup, Scottish cup knocked out in the semis by rangers.

Domestically not too shabby. In a two horse race he won 2 out 3 times.

However the saying you can only beat the team put in front of you is apt when you play in Scotland every week.

Europa Conference league they got put in the knockout round playoffs after losing in a CL qualifier to Midtjylland(!?!) and then being knocked out in the group stages of the EL.

So Europa Conference they played Bodo Glint in February 2022.
Lost 5-1 on aggregate. Including 3-1 loss at home.

Think that highlights the “strength” of the Scottish league.

Totally different ball game now. Man needs time rather than people saying “he will win you a trophy he’s a guaranteed winner” etc etc.

He’s really not. Bodo fucking Glint.
Sounds like he'll fit right in at Spurs, who have turned dropping matches to European clubs no one has heard of into an artform.

I could have posted this in the transfer thread too really. Maybe he is taking those along that are linked with moves so they can see how hard (different) training will be and if they hate it, it my speed up their moves to get them out the door. Let's be honest., leaving players home in the past to find moves has never worked.

Also, it bins off the feeling of ‘division’ that’s been plaguing this club since Poch left.

Now, if we could just work on the division between the fans…

This section from Ally Gold's piece:

Postecoglou has admitted himself that some might find his ways extreme, with his relentless attacking, possession-based football, with near non-stop training sessions of 60-70 minutes during the season to reflect the time the ball is in play during a match. In pre-season the work is even tougher to prepare the players' bodies physically for the energy required in the months ahead.

Particularly for our more attack-minded players, it's crucial for Ange to learn how quickly their footballing brains work when the focus is on quick, pass & move, attacking play.

Under Mourinho, Nuno & Conte, they've been drilled into safety-first, getting back into shape, safe rather than risky play. So pre-season is partly about changing the mentaltiy, and seeing who flourishes & who looks lost.

Then, next, Ange needs to see which players can physically survive the relentlessness, without their bodies screaming "no mas", or getting injured.

For instance, GLC may look creative & dangerous in Ange's attacking system. Whether he can physically survive pre-season is another matter altogether.

And there's risk too. Any of our "sellable" players who get injured in pre-season will likely still be with us come September.

Hard work ought to be a pre-requisite and it still sounds more enjoyable than a day on the training ground with Conte.........

Was listing to one of the old Stoke crew on the radio the other day and Pullis would have them go literally days at a time without even touching a football!

Genuine question: do we actually have a specialist fitness coach as part of our new setup?

Conte did have his specialist, Pietro "The Marine" Ventrone, who sadly passed away during the season.

I remember van Pervert slagging off Moyes' endless running sessions at manure as "Scottish training".

Here's a snippet from a Dutch trainer (from 2013):

-----------------------------------------

The Dutch fitness specialist Raymond Verheijen has criticised the training methods of David Moyes, who claimed to have "overtrained" Robin van Persie "to build up his fitness".
"The only way to solve this problem in Jurassic Park is to improve education of these dinosaur coaches, fitness clowns & scientific cowboys," he wrote. "All over the world in preseason you see the pattern overtraining-fatigue-injuries'. Always avoid accumulation of fatigue in pre-season."

And Verheijen was dubious as to football's ability to align with his recommendations. "As long as most dinosaurs are still in denial and ignore how things develop in other countries, nothing will ever change," he said. "Obviously, players like RVP should learn to protect themselves better against 'overtraining'."

Aside from Ange, Mase & Jedinak; I haven't the foggiest.....

I'd be somewhat dismayed to learn that we have no-one other than the manager barking at them to "run harder".

(Pisses me off for years that we don't have an in house sports psychologist too.)

As for Moyes: Sounded like they thought everything about Moyes was a bit old fashioned and that the training methods and tactics were no better either..... That's not to say his end of the stick wasn't also smeared with shit too (undermined at various levels, dead food squad and low investment by their standards), but bombing out all of Fergies crew in one go was a dumb move.

So gutted to see him NOT in his Celtic gear.

We REALLY could've had something special with him imo.
He's just that guy. Never consideres failure as an option, and isn't interested in mollycoddling bratty millionaire footballers. Give him 100, or you're dropped.

Perfect balance of an old school manager with modern tactical and training approaches.

I only have the one friend who's a spurs fan, he was actually LIVID when Ange was first linked. Now he's crowing happily about what a breath of fresh air he is, and how he can't help but be excited.

All best Spurs fans. I'll be watching for your results, and imo... Title in 3-4 years. A few domestic trophies in between.

Enjoy him while you can, there's always a "bigger fish" .

Ta ta.
One Rangers manager, that's what he got the better of. GVB

Enjoy watching Cantwell and Raskin pishing all over the SPL.

Nice bit of revisionism. Gerard did a runner before he got shown up. Van Bronkhorst quietly dismantled. Beale only took points of him after the league was won and lost the only 2 cup matches they played. One final and one semi.

Rodgers Celtic this season will rag-doll Rangers again with the team Ange built. Cantwell is average.

Nice horse shit, but horse shit all the same.
