There wasn't really any other choice, and the only alternative was a couple weeks of uncertainty waiting on the CL draw, FA cup results, etc, leaving the FA, EPL, UEFA, opposing teams, etc in the lurch.

Well, obviously the thing about UEFA not being willing to have a CL fixture be the first game WAS true. Something had to give.
