The pessimist in me is glad we can still try to win the trophy below if things don't pan out.

Only if you promise me that we beat the Scousers in the QF, Absolutely destroy the chavs in the SF, then win the final against the Goonies with an injury time goal where Sissoko scores the winner tapping the ball in from 6 yards out with an erection that sprung up in preparation for the goal he would score.

I know I'm biased, but fuck a duck they'd be crazy to play a full strength team against our lot with the glut of games coming up and such a tightly squeezed league position with so many threats around them. I smell a bit of controversy already

Certainly possible given the circumstances (more or less a meaningless game for Barca, a crucial game for us), it all looked very gloomy after the needless draw at PSV (1 point from 3 matches), but there are good reasons to be optimistic again, I'm sure we will have at the very least a good go at them.

The away to Espanyol thing would be a problemo, except Espanyol are a Barcelona club.

With the size of his erection the ball would go over the bar but he would probably be brought down by bus-conductor first!

I think the point is that they have a big derby before hand and their focus will be on that over a CL group game in a group they have already won.

Regardless, their home record in the CL is ridiculous, they haven't lost there since 2013, and only drawn twice.

Absolute scenes if we pull it off but agree that we should be concentrating on the Scum for now.

If Barca do put out an under-strength side, or tell their players to go easy due to the matches either side... then yeah, we've got a chance. However, their home record in the CL is stupidly good and notably they barely ever concede a goal. The UK bookies have us at 2/1 to get a win, which is probably a little stingy given the task.

Think you're over estimating how they value this derby. It's more equivalent to Spurs-Palace than Spurs-Woolwich.

I dunno, my impression is that its a bigger rivalry than El Clasico? Just much more one sided.

And like a lot of big derbies the animosity is rooted in politics. Barca are obviously Catalan nationalists and Espanyol are loyal to the crown. Perhaps you are right and its more relevant to Espanyol because of the gulf in quality.

Either way i agree, it's a game to be considered after the scum are brushed aside so hard that they fall back into a spiral of despair, self doubt and infighting that they will never recover from.

Barca haven't lost at home since May 2013

Since then - they have won 25 and drawn 2

Would love to believe, but I think we blew this when we lost to Inter having dominated for 89 minutes. For me both Barca games were for prestige only - we were never winning those - could have had a draw at Wembley if we didn't have Eriksen and Dele out

I much rather beat the Scum in the Europa final - even if we make the R16 - we're never winning the CL
