Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

1)
He's been one of the worst center halves in the entire PL for going on a season and a half.

2)
Glacially slow of foot and prone to some terrible mental lapses on top of it.

3) He was dreadful last night again, and I cannot possibly see the reason for giving him a new contract at this point other than "he used to be good before all the injuries".

1) Bullshit, no where near it, man up. The team has been shit and he's in the team, that's all.

2) He may have lost some pace as he's got older, this is where Poch should have realised he wasn't going to catch fast players on the break and dropped the defensive line deeper to counter the threat. But he didn't, because there wasn't a plan B

3) As per 1. The first goal came as a result of a poor flick by Danny Rose that didn't make it to Alderwerield. That kinda shit happens in football.

If we want to upgrade on Toby, we would need to spend £50m+ and we'd need to upgrade on Jan too, so double that on CB's
Ain't happening.

Genuinely confused now.

Is it good news that we are sorting out a new contract for him or bad? Does it fill you with confidence that Jose doesn't want the rebuild that Poch did?

Maybe we keep Toby and sell Jan????

Maybe he signs a new deal now and we sell him in June rather him go for nothing.

Your looking at 60 mil plus to replace him for someone that may or maybe not cut it. Hes played in a back four for 18 months that has been changed every game. Like others have said jose will not play such a ridiculous high line, play full backs as defenders first and foremost. Any centre half playing for us the last 18 months would of found themselves isolated.

Not to mention the apparent dip in form has coincided with the demise of the Dembele/Wanyama Axis in front of him.

Yes, also now that I think Poch's high line was always so dependent on the pace that Jan and Toby had, they were the quickest CB duo in PL once. If we adjust our tactics and protect them better they probably will find better form.

The centre half personell has never been the problem. It's the high line when no pressure on the ball as our pressing game disappeared, full backs in a back four playing as wingers so on the turnover we were all over the place. Poch could of kept his job with a back to basics approach. It cost him his job as he over thought everything in the end. 3 at the back, diamond you name it and it week to week and different 11 week to week. By all means freshen up 1-2 areas but your keeper and back four has to play week in week out

I remember that useless prick AVB playing high lines against teams like Man City and wondering why we got twatted 6-0

This was telling with the Sheffield United game against united at the weekend, whereby the keeper not playing was the first time all season their back 5 players had a single change.

Surprising to me that Toby is being picked ahead of Vertonghen. Both have suffered dips in form and most likely the consequences of getting older, but Verts has been the better of the pair for some time now.

#if Toby is fourth choice, I'm happy enough ehind Dav, Foyth and new signing, perhaps fighting it out with Tanganga.

But as a first choice player, well, God help us.

A present, if we want to upgrade on Toby we play any other centre half on our books.

Welcome to 2019, your DeLorean needs serviced.

Adding Toby and jettisoning Kaboul was one of the primary reasons for the Spurs renaissance. A couple years ago, I raved on this board he was the best CB in the league, and one of the best in all of Europe. He was playing flawlessly.

Admittedly, he’s lost a step, and has looked a bit clumsy lately, but quality CB’s don’t grow on trees. Keep him. Pay him.

Agreed 100%. He was possibly the best center half in the world for a few years, an absolute Rolls-Royce of a footballer.

He's not "lost a step", he's lost an entire skyscraper worth of steps. Keep him and pay him huge wages well past 30 when he's clearly not going to get younger or quicker? It's unfortunate for him and for us, that the leg injuries in 2016 and 2017 robbed him of his pace and confidence at a younger age than they should have, but that's the reality we now face. He's been abjectly terrible for nearly a season and a half now.

It's sad, but we're going to have to move on.
