Why would anyone pay £25m for him for the equivalent of 1 season when he wants 200k a week wages? Just doesn’t make sense.

Can see him going to Juve in a years time on a free. That seems to be their particular M.O. these days.

Hopefully we have him for the one more season and Sanchez can just be eased into the team more and more.

£25m and new player needed or 1 more year. Not sure there is much in it.

But as others have said, doesn't look as if anyone will pay the £25m in order to give him £200k PW (£10m pa) contract which he'd probably ask for 5 years but settle for 3 or 4 - so a contract cost of £55m or £65m and no resale value.

So if club only want to offer us say £15m we might as well keep him for a last season at his (current relatively low £80k PW or £4m pa) contract.

Probably make Suarez/Vertonghen our first choice CB partnership so that Suarez gets good training of Jan with Alderweireld and Dier as back up CBs......and also hope Tanganga shows something in preseason so we have a youngster coming through (Lyons Foster also going o preseason is just not ready physically fit regular first team action).

May mean we need to buy 2 CBs next summer though, unless Poch moves Foyth back from RB to CB at the end of the season, and next season at RB is to increase the amount of game experience he gets.

Suarez...? :dembelewtf:

Toby for one season is worth more to us than 25M.

I don't know how much he's asking, but it's his right, he's our best defender. Would love to see him here for 3 more years.

Fan claiming to have inside knowledge.

As has been said by others it looks like nobody wants to activate the £25m release clause so he will stay next season until his contract runs out.

But what then - he's 31 but has 2 or 3 seasons at the top left in him before ( as he claims) he wants to wind down at Ajax. And Ajax cannot/will not pay the mega wages he craves so he had 2 or 3 years left at mega wages.

He's probably found that few clubs are offering anything like the wages he was offered at Spurs and turned down.

So think it's very much in his interest to see if he can get a 2 or 3 year new contract at Spurs. But will Spurs want to do that after he's been such high maintenance for the last couple of years ?

That's another question, and might run until next summer

Nice post!

Not sure about this. Players in this situation are always 'close' to signing a new contract but never quite manage it and time drifts until they are free to leave. We shall see

Making him skipper today is odd if he was close to leaving though. Think there might be something in it.

Not really. He is the most experienced player starting and it's not like he is causing problems at the club. He is a Tottenham player and Poch treats him the same way as the others
