And so the time has come...

This is not a post about Kane's decision to leave, and it's not really even about ENIC. It's simply about a great sadness that I suspect many of us feel.

We had a once-in-a-lifetime player, through our youth team, from the area, a genuine love for the club, and legitimately one of the greatest players not only in the world but in our wonderful club's history.

And apart from great memories tinged with disappointing outcomes we have nothing to show for it. Ledley at least got to lift a trophy. Gazza had a huge impact in our last big success. Kane came and went with a number of personal records and little else.

There will be plenty of posts about his own performances in decisive matches, or the players surrounding him, but this is simply a post about the lamentable situation of seeing the rare opportunity of having one of the greatest ever strikers squandered for a variety of reasons.

We can and will regroup, and can be better than the sum of our parts, but it's nevertheless a sorry final curtain to a special era.

He's got himself a prestigious club to play for where he can challenge himself with something new, fair play to him.

Yes the German League isn't anything to shout about, unless you happen to beat Bayern to the title, but it's not quite the French or Scottish leagues.

Let's face it, Kane's only option of staying in the premier league was by staying at here. There was no offer from Spain or Italy, and Bayern are offering a lucrative contract. He could have stayed with us till next summer, but that's always risky, what if he had an injury that kept him out for a significant period towards the end of the season? There's also a chance no one in England would be interested in an expensive deal for a 31 year old given free transfers just mean you pay the transfer fee to the player instead. City don't need him, he might not have wanted to go Chelsea or Woolwich, and maybe we've let him know we're planning a different course after years of taking strikers at the tail end of their careers, or adopting a system that he doesn't suit.
