Yeah replays scrapped 5th rnd as most if not all the lower league sides would be out by then. Seems to me replays before then are to ensure the big clubs get a second chance. ET/Pens in early rnds could effectively knock them ('big teams') out ! That would never do, would it?!!!!
I mean, you're right to say that's a consequence of the replay system - e.g. if Colchester had gone to a replay there's a 90% chance we'd have gone through. But there are some advantages to the smaller teams - Colchester may well have been better off firstly in supporter enjoyment and in terms of revenue losing the replay than going through and losing to a side without such a big away day. And to suggest replays were first introduced decades and decades ago to protect big clubs just doesn't make much sense.
