We're doing bloody well so can't gripe but our inability to take a fucking decent set piece - be it a simple corner or, heaven forbid, a decent free-kick - is making my blood boil. Am I alone in this?

Can anyone please tell me how talents like VDV, Modric, Bale, etc can be so consitently shit at taking a set play? I'm not asking for the world, just the odd corner whipped in at pace that goes beyond the fucking first man, and the occasional free-kick that doesn't cannon off the wall or balloon over. Or how about this: an intelligent 'worked' free-kick straight from the training ground?!

Yet again against Wolves we were hopeless: over hit/under hit corners, silly short ones, and when we get a free-kick in the last-minute in a glorious position to snatch the win what happens...? URRGGGHHHH

Apologies for the rant but I've had enough. Just makes me wonder what the hell these guys do on the training ground.

tin hat on, but we could do with a peter crouch type towards the end of tight games when we're putting lots of pressure on, crouch changed the whole dynamic of our opponants defence at corners and we have no variation at the minute, once our centre halves are marked, thats pretty much it.
now i wouldnt want crouch in the first team or any long streak of piss type of player, but we need a plan C for late in games where defences are sitting deeper and theres no space for our pace to exploit. i'd rather have kept him for desparate situations than bring pav on, who couldnt give a shit anymore and basically, dont try. we have everything in our team bar any aerial threat, and on occasion, we need one. we also have defoe, mods , vdv, lennon and bale who can take half chances that a good target man would create, so if arry's listening, get a good young striker who's physical and willing, dont have to be best finisher or the quickest, we have those already, but we dont score 'ugly' enough.

I totally agree. The last few games I've been to its glaringly obvious that we have problems with our set pieces.
If you look at the amount of corners or free kicks we earn we could easily have doubled our goal tally if we made something out of them.
It gets to the point that getting a free kick or corner becomes a bit pointless. In my view we are definitely better off trying to play it short or along the ground.

I'd love to see the stats on how many times this season we scored from a corner or free kick. Last time I remember was the free kick from Pav in the Europa.

Sort this out and we really will have an all round game making us even more dangerous.

COYS!

You may be surprised at how our stats for corner compare to others. Don't get me wrong, they look poor on paper, but i think few teams actually utilise them. TBC...

Thing is, when we win a corner or a well placed free-kick, there's no expectancy in the stadium. It's like we've become used to the steaming pile of shite which are our set pieces

I yearn to cheer for a team that, when the commentators say, “oh, and it’ll be a free-kick! Good opportunity, here!” I don’t think they’re being sarcastic.

Last year, if memory serves, vdV went on a torrid run across half the season of launching every corner into the basket made by the keeper’s forearms. :vdv: :harryblow:

Don't know the stats, but I'll bet we're bottom of the corners won to converted stats league.

Thing is, we probably create the most chances per game on average than any other team in the league. Naturally a lot if those end up resulting in a corner or a free kick around the area. Set pieces should be our main revenue of goals.

We are missing a massive trick here, and it's definitely an issue and I don't think it's being "fickle" to raise this point. Good thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Bale used to be a bit of a free-kick 'specialist'? Where the hell has this ability suddenly gone?

These players must be aware of how inept they've been at free-kicks and if so remedy it on the training ground. I'd rather see them try to work a free-kick than consistently bash one against the wall time and time again.

It's a small gripe considering our season so far, but an important part of the game that we're not capitalising on.

Intrigued to see the corner stats and how many free-kicks we've actually converted in terms of attempts ratio, etc...

Yes he did. I think the only time he scored one for us though was not long after he joined. Since his resurgence as a midfielder his free kick specialty seems to have disappeared.

Kaboul can hammer them as well.
