It's really just an observation thread.
Makes me feel old to think it was 20 years ago Iversen was starting up front for us.

Some names in there which make me shudder to think I supported them representing my club! (Particularly in 2000)

Perhaps I was looking for a snapshot of progress in terms of quality as each decade ticks over. During this time period we haven't won an awful lot.

Which of the above 11's do you feel offered the most quality then?

I think I will go for the 2010 team to be honest. That was a slightly rotated FA Cup fixture to be fair, and of course players will be missing from each side for various reasons - but these are the teams we kicked off each decade with.

I'm going with '90. Lineker, Gazza and Mabbutt as the spine of the team with Howells as a solid defensive mid. Most of that team around them are solid. Good balanced side with some great players.

Having said that, on paper the 2020 side has more quality in it than any of the other teams. It's just on grass that they seem to have problems.

There for the first three of those games. Thankfully missed the last!

Imagine the composite XI’s - best & worst:

Walker
Mabsy - Dawson - Verts - Bale
Modric - Gazza - Ginola
Lineker - Kane - Keane

or

Mimms
Aurier - Perry - Bassong - Bergson
Clemence - Sherwood - Sideways
Armstrong - Moura

Weird question to answer. The Premier legume has become so much more vastly competitive since 1990, so while on paper the 2020 is the best everyone else has improved just as much meaning we have stayed still to some extent.

Mimms
Aurier - Perry - Bassong - Bergson
Clemence - Sherwood - Sideways
Armstrong - Moura

Bassong was solid - much better than turds like Rocha and Chiriches

Moura as in Lucas?

Rebrov was a million times worse

What about Campbell or even Bent? He cost us a mint back then. Even Soldado was dog shit. At least Pav scored some belters

EDIT - missed the start of the decade part, sorry

Whatever anyone thinks of the quality or lack of quality of the previous listed sides it is hard to imagine that they would have had less heart, determination, leadership on the pitch or togetherness than our current team. Come on Mourinho sort em out

The 1990 team has got me feeling very nostalgic...And old.

You would have to look at the whole squad to make a comparison rather than the team in one game.

If you put Anderton and Allen Nielsen in that 2000 team for example then it looks a lot better.

The 1990 team were the only one with changes to win anything the following year. The problem is remembering the standard of the player at that time. We know how Toby and Jan are playing now but in 10 years time we will remember them at their best. How good was Mabbot in 1990?j how good was Bale in 2010? When you look at Modric and Bale you think class but they never won anything and really never looked like they would in 2010.

Mabbutt was a class player.Always gave everything.Probably only had a few of seasons at his best left in him in 1990, but was still a great player then. the 2010 team was capable enough to win a League cup,but didn't. As was the present lot 3 seasons back(more so).The fact they didn't is particularly annoying.

How can you have walker as the best keeper?

Gomes in his prime was great.

Fair one..

I just thought it was a poor selection of GK’s and had memories of Gomes, complete with gum shield, almost crying away to Stoke.

I won’t die in ditch over any of them.In fact, fuck it, put Kane in goal....

Gomes' best performance for us was Chelsea at home when Redknapp first took over. We beat them through a Modric winner but he was incredible that day.

Made a save from a John Terry header that I swear was better than Banks/Pele.

Just a shame he had a balls up in him.
