Media Bias

We shouldn't get all paranoid about the media being anti spurs and bias towards certain clubs, its nonsense. When we reach the top, you will see how much the media adores us. We just need to get there first.
No chance, even when we did finish in the top 4 the media started calling it the top 5 because City had just fell in to their money and were being given the star treatment. Once they established themselves at our expense the following season, it became the top 4 again.

It's very simple really..clubs with the most fans get the most coverage and the most time in the media.
It's really not hard to understand why.
This.

Hate to break it to people but there is no bias.

Year after our Champions League run all I heard from fans of other teams was "why are Spurs on Sky so much now"? Well, the answer was obvious. We had got to a higher level.

Anyone whinging about bias needs to understand that not only are we considered also runs this season, but that we haven't exactly been putting things on fire before this result.

If Wigan, for instance, put 4 past Man City this week, would they be headliners? Nope, it would just be a giant killing, nothing more, nothing less.

We want the positive headlines then we have to compete in a sustained way, not just expect the tabloid turds to fall out our feet when we have a decent result.

When we were ripping it up the media adored us - I didn't take it too seriously, and I don't now. As others have said, get into the top 4, playing dazzling, attacking football - with your TV games guaranteeing goals galore, and they'll 'love' us again. Not many neutrals wanted to watch or read about us under AVB, and IMO we are still suffering from that hangover. I'm not bothered what the media think - it affects nothing in my life.

Özil: looks shite.
I did notice this I guess, but while the result was a surprise to the neutral public it was not the Earth shattering development it was to Spurs fans, who are steeped in pessimism. How much media frenzy was there for Leicester for example after they ran Manchester United out of the building a couple of months ago? I think the real story we all saw yesterday was Spurs emphatically turning a corner, but even if we see that writing on the wall it's still a bigger story that will take a few more weeks to flesh out for the public at large, who may still see yesterday as a one off shock result. I think the story we're all sensing is that this was not a one off, but that story has yet to unfold. It will. In the meantime, let Jose go ahead and whine about the officiating in a game in which they conceded 5 goals.

sky and co are selling audiences to advertisers. the audience of a burnley or a stoke is more limited than that of your manures or liverpools, so the latter will get more coverage.

Under the current system we must expand our audience in unsaturated markets to warrant more coverage. playing at a higher level in the last few years has helped us to kick on a bit in this respect, even if we have stagnated slightly since Bale left.

of course the conception of an "audience" for a news corporation and a "fan" are not exactly equivalent, so in some ways this approach is limited or short sighted, for me anyway

Yes we want the glory of being spoken about in a favourable way.
Also we have to except at the moment that in terms of the food chain we are below ManU, Liverpiss, Arsescum, Chelsea, ManC in that order.

I accept that (while kicking the cat and screaming injustice), and I expect that Poch does not care, rather enjoys it.
If we can fly under the radar, that is good. We have continue picking up points and take the arguments away.
Carry on Tottenham.

Like I said earlier I like it going unnoticed. One point to add based on some posts made since though.

I agree we're not at the level of those other clubs BUT it's not really relevant whether we are on par or not as it as with other teams. News is news it's not a popularity contest. Last night's game should get as equal a billing as it would if United or City did the exact same thing.

In Sky's case if they don't deem it worthy then they should remove the word "news" from their channel and their website and stop pretending to be a legitmate media outlet. Farcical that they do as it is, what with endless shitty polls about redundant subjects. It's not like they are short of time to report actual news on a channel that runs 24/7

I honestly do not believe its against us, its all about Skys vested interests. They support the teams that they can promote for thier coverage and sell thier brand. We can be part of that but we need to be top level on a regukar basis. I can create conspiracies with the best but on this occcasion it simply marketing. I believe some media adores us and love it when we hit the highs, we just dont do it often enough ti get noticed?

Lets remember it was covered by BT so Sky have no interest in promoting a classic match. They ran with Stevie G retiring ( cringe shortening of a name). The online tabloids have all covered the game as expected, I haven read the Sun though?

A lot of our games are on BT sport & their advert for the Chav game remains one of the greatest & unexpected lol moments I've had in years. Maybe sky are having their stranglehold broken by BT? Maybe BT have some of the "also rans" as their vanguard? That would explain why Murdochs morons are putting every shit story they can scrape up ahead of a massive victory. Not just for us, but for the EPL this season? Sweep it under the carpet & wankered about Gerard. Top player, no doubt, but he hasn't died. He is leaving the bin dippers to go in search of food porn bins to dip across the pond. Who really gives a shit?

It does make one wonder why Gerrard and co decided to release his retirement story one hour after our game finished. He then gets over the top coverage which I considered generous given his recent form. When we put 5 past the Woolwich who is going to announce their retirement then?

Back in the 80's Im sure we had Harry Harris of the Daily Mirror bias towards us and others moaned? I cant remember hearing complaints then from Spurs then when we were getting favourable back page covereage ?
It is what it is. Its big news Chave losing and the media would love it if chelsea collapse, they are not liked but do sell news. If there is bias, we keep winning and we cant be ignore much longer?

...anyway, back to topic...
in the early '80s, we were the 'swagger club'... and a lot of Fleet Street's 'finest' u53d to support, or at least look kindly on us (mainly at the Daily Mail, weirdly/annoyingly enough... but 'Arry 'Arris was a big player back then, with lots of influence...)

Nowadays, Sky have the 'say' in who we're allowed to support... and if they had their way, the Top Four Monopoly would be everyone's main, actual teams, (deep down, when they look at them53lves in the mirror) whereas the other 88 also rans would just be people's '53cond clubs'... who53 results they maybe looked for occasionally.. to 53e if little Tottenham or Everton, had up53t one of the 'Big Boys'... but if they did actually manage it, the media doesn't really like it, 'cos y'know, it disturbs the balance of things, besides... Jo53 Mourinho might get up53t!
...you know what i'm getting at!
