Talking to a South Korean bloke a work who 'doesn't like football' but knows an absolute fuck load about Son and even YP Lee. Shows the status those guys have as sportsmen in the country.

The national service can be excused to those who win a gold medal at the Asian Games, in Jakarta . This comes up 18 August to 2 September this year which I guess means we may miss Son for the start of the season... but it's basically his best chance of being excused.

So he may end up avoiding national service after all...

    • North and South Korea reportedly set to announce official end to war
      • Ahead of a summit next week between North Korean premier Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-In, lawmakers from the neighboring states were thought to be negotiating the details of a joint statement that could outline an end to the military conflict between the two countries.
      • Pyongyang and Seoul have technically been at war since the 1950-1953 Korean conflict ended with a truce — and not a peace treaty.

[paste:font size="3"]North and South Korea are in talks to announce a permanent end to the officially declared military conflict between the two countries, daily newspaper Munhwa Ilbo reported Tuesday, citing an unnamed South Korean official.

Ahead of a summit next week between North Korean premier Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, lawmakers from the neighboring states were thought to be negotiating the details of a joint statement that could outline an end to the confrontation.

Kim and Moon could also discuss returning the heavily fortified demilitarized zone separating them to its original state, the newspaper said.

Pyongyang and Seoul have technically been at war since the 1950-1953 Korean conflict ended with a truce — and not a peace treaty. Geopolitical tensions have occasionally flared up since the armistice, although to date both countries have managed to avoid another devastating conflict.

A successful summit between the Koreas later this month could help pave the way for a meeting between Kim and President Donald Trump. The U.S. president and North Korean leader are poised to hold talks in late May or June, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

lol Koreans, including myself, dont buy into shits like this as we have seen 43289343402842 news about both "possible imminent wars" and "possible end of war" for ages. It will never happen. It's been way too long since we got separated that they are now totally different nations. It will cost at least 3 trillion to reunite. I know this article isnt about reunification, but "ending a war" is nothing but an agreement that can be broken at any time.

Fair enough and v interesting to get a feel from you - the view and long term beliefs of Koreans are not really played out in the press, and not knowing any myself, am reliant on articles like this to inform, so again, genuinely thanks for educating

If your reply to the gentleman who brought this news here was to let him know that this won’t have any real bearing on Son’s military situation, I would agree with you.

Also, yes, the news about possible imminent wars- sure there were more than plenty gazillion times in the past, but a possible ending of war news? like this?? When was the last one or two I have missed? Especially now everyone suspects that NK has completed their nuclear capability? Doesn’t it sound any different to you?

And how can you say “it will never happen”? Never ever??

Some Koreans, obviously not you, will and should not stop listening to any decent possibility of “ending war” or “reunification” dialogue even though this type of rhetorics have been played hudreds of times in the past.
