Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He has the ability to change a game but I’m not sure he believes that at the moment or that it’s his responsibility, he’s strong and controlled, would like to see him having a few longer runs and more shots on goal. Technically he is very good, I’m sure some shots would go in or cause a rebound.
Yeah he rarely ever gets tackled and seems to turn players easily so he has the technical skills and awareness, just fucking let a few shots off Winksy FFS!

There was a shocking lack of pressure on the ball. one from Eriksen (I think), Sissoko or Winks should have been like a terrier on Sideshow Bob Mk2.0. Having said that, and I have a different view to many on Roses fault for the Villa goal and the Newcastle goal, but Danny just watches Aubamayang run away from him behind Jans back. Jan has no idea he's there but Rose literally lets him go. He surely has to follow that run?

Having just watched that clip a few times, I'm going to say Eriksen needed to be much more sure that he'd seen the danger off. He makes the initial half hearted press and then backs off to leave the space that eventually allows the ball into the box.
Tough one as if he does and that ball goes over his head to Pepe then he's proper f*ucked and loses his man. I think it was just a very very good run + Jan isn't faultless as doesn't have any idea where his man is...overall maybe just a good goal that's hard to defend once he's been given time to pick that pass?

Great stuff from him again yesterday.

Commentators on the channel I was watching when he was replaced by Ndombele.

"If he's worth £63m how much is Winks worth ? Winks is a fabulous player"

Winks is no disrespect to KWP a different level to him right now. The reason why people like Winks is because

1 he is a fantastic passer (statistic one of the best passers in the whole league).

2 his energy levels are excellent. He is also for his size very strong and also quicker than most people think.

3 his defensive positioning and tackling is now generally good rather than average or poor when he first moved to the number 6 role but still can improve.

4 he is able to maintain possession even under huge pressure. Even in our CL defeat he was one of our few performing players.

5 his general form is stable, he is a reliable player.

He has weaknesses, he needs to switch a bit more from safe mode to creative mode when approaching the final 3rd, his positional defending is also sometimes a bit to aggressive IMO and thus leaves space that can put our CB’s in trouble, but he is a natural number 8 not number 6.

I remember seeing a spurs vid with Winks and Dele and, when asked what ability he wished he could nick from his team mate, Dele said his passing.

I agree with most of your points but I would disagree that he has high energy levels, he tends to gas himself out and has been replaced pretty early in every league game, which is far from ideal as we then have to restructure our entire midfield.
Also his defensive positioning and awareness are still some way off being a top DM.

It's bordering criminal how good he could be imo if he had a specialist DM next to him and he was able to play with a bit more freedom.

Re Energy: This season maybe, but he was an ever present 90min man last season.

Sometimes, but when he's been in the role he's been in this season he almost always has to come off. He just doesn't have the legs or lungs for it. Couple that with the fact he's more than slightly injury prone and it's just a recipe for disaster.

Sometimes,

Sometimes what?

Winks was all but never subbed off last year.... We leant on him heavily all year.

Vs Villa it was a tactical switch (to bring on a more attacking player in Eriksen).
Vs Palace likely to be to get Ndombele some game time before the CL game.
Vs City again it was as much tactical as anything else.

You say you're concerned about him being injury prone; then equally, managing his minutes is a good thing, surely?

Can't say I share your concerns about his energy levels, tbh.
